Children wearing jogging bottoms to school ...

Aibu to find it irritating seeing more and more primary school ages children walking to school in branded jogging bottoms and trainers. I think it looks really scruffy and it's just a case of laziness.

A pair of school trousers costs about £3 from supermarkets. Shoes from primark about £8. It's not a case of not being able to afford a proper uniform as some of these branded joggers cost about £20+ quid!

I just find it sad how many parents can't be bothered/don't want to dress their child up properly for school

I've noticed this. Also a few girls wearing leggings instead of trousers/skirts.

I know posters will say sensory issues but my DD is friends with these girls and they just like to wear leggings apparently 😯

Butttons · 29/11/2017 14:51

YABU.

My DD is in reception and on the days they have PE the school ask them to go to school wearing their PE kit (joggers and sweatshirt in winter) as it's easier than trying to help 30 4/5-year olds get dressed during the school day.

Sirzy · 29/11/2017 14:52

Why does it matter?

Ttbb · 29/11/2017 14:52

YANBU. No reason not to dress your child properly.

AfunaMbatata · 29/11/2017 14:52

I’d rather my child was comfortable than uncomfortable and therefore distracted from learning.

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 29/11/2017 14:52

My DC's school doesn't allow jogging bottoms, or leggings except grey leggings under skirts for Muslim girls, or trainers.

magpiemischief · 29/11/2017 14:53

It's not how I dressed mine but it really does not bother me. If the clothes are comfortable, clean and practical, I am fine with them. I think it's rather mean not to be.

KalaLaka · 29/11/2017 14:53

YANBU to find it irritating. YABU to care so much about other parents' choices and think we are all the same.

Frege · 29/11/2017 14:55

At my kids' school they wear jogging bottoms and polo shirts until 7, then proper trousers with blazer and tie. Seems fine to me. Why would you want tiny kids in anything other than the most comfortable clothes? School uniform is weird anyway, like a mini business suit- making kids who are barely out of nursery wear it looks awful IMO.

implantsandaDyson · 29/11/2017 14:55

My kids primary school doesn't change them for PE - the whole way through from P1 to P7 so there would be kids in jogging bottoms/leggings, trainers heading in most days. It doesn't make me feel particularly sad in fact I find it very handy.

FizzyWaterAndElderflower · 29/11/2017 14:55

My kids wear jeans/trousers/joggers to school - but then we don't have a school uniform here (and, I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but it's so much better - even than the branded sweatshirt/polo/m&s trousers he wore in the UK).

I can't see what the problem with jogging bottoms is myself. They're warm, practical, if unbranded are cheap and you don't need to worry if they get stuff on them, don't need ironing - that's exactly what I want in clothes for my primary schooler!

Mind you, I live in the Balkans right now, and it's practically a uniform for men as well, and yes, it's taken a little bit of adjustment to realise it's just normal clothing, and not someone being intentionally scruffy.

Evelynismyspyname · 29/11/2017 14:55

School trousers are generally made of Teflon though. They're really the strangest thing to decide to dress anyone in.

Why does it upset you to see children wearing comfortable, practical clothing instead of less comfortable, less practical clothing?

I don't see the problem. I see more of a problem when adults need to criticise over minor things that neither hurt nor concern them, tbh.

xTinkerhellx · 29/11/2017 14:57

My DD wears jogging bottoms. They are warm, comfortable, easy to change for PE/toilet and she likes them.

It is within the uniform policy of the school which states 'any black bottoms' so actually, she is dressed properly for school.

Curious to understand what the educational benefit is of wearing a pair of trousers over a pair of jogging bottoms.

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/11/2017 14:58

Wish mine could wear joggers and leggings to school. Would he preferable to irritating uniform which makes her itch.

Uniform is shit. Kids should be comfy
Parents should be less snobby.

FittonTower · 29/11/2017 14:59

What difference does what children wear on their legs make to their education?

Justmuddlingalong · 29/11/2017 14:59

I agree.Joggers look ridiculous with a boater. Confused

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 29/11/2017 14:59

Just as an extra to this...my son wore jogging bottoms for the whole of Y3 and 4 . He is autistic and went through a time where I could get nothing on his lower half which wasn't elasticated at the waist.

Then summer holiday before Y5 he suddenly changed...I was in a uniform shop buying new polo shirts and they asked about trousers. DS was suddenly all up for trying some on and we never looked back. Smile

On th whole though I prefer school trousers in children as they look smart. If they are comfy then even better.

Evelynismyspyname · 29/11/2017 15:00

I read a very amusing article by a baffled parent from overseas pondering why her child's new English school required the children to wear cheap shiny suits like junior estate agents or delinquent youths going to their first court hearing...

LittleMissUnreasonable · 29/11/2017 15:00

Thanks for feedback and I don't mean to offend anyone :)

I think the concern wax more with branded joggers than plain ones as some kids parents can't afford the branded ones and it makes them more susceptible to being picked on. Just wanted to know everyone's thoughts

YABU. If the school don't have a problem, neither should you. School uniform should be more like Brownie etc uniform anyway IMO, something that they can run around in.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 29/11/2017 15:02

That's wonderful Delores :)

I remember wearing jogging bottoms to primary school.

By some miracle my IQ turned out not to be directly connected to the cloth on my lower portions, and I went to a redbrick university
