Genuine question incase I'm being unreasonable.

One of my best friends (also a colleague) has lost quite a bit of weight over the last few weeks. I don't know exact figures but she had to rebuy a lot of her clothes in smaller sizes because they were falling off her. Ive just spent the day with her and was quite shocked by the amount she ate... looking for some perspective incase I'm just greedy!

  • two bits of white bread which she was dipping in a mug of tomato soup. She stopped eating after finishing the bread and left about half the mug.
  • one jammy dodger (highly calorific apparently...)

We then got a Chinese for dinner where she (reluctantly) had:

  • chicken noodle soup where she picked out all the chicken
  • one vegetable spring roll
  • about 5 chips with curry sauce and a few prawn crackers

I expressed concern that she wasn't eating but she said the amount of fat and calories in the Chinese evened it out and that she felt too disgusting to eat anymore

I know I shouldn't be judging and I'm trying not to but I'm getting concerned, this isn't a healthy amount is it?

it's not much but most people eat too much tbh.
She probably had something for breakfast and something after you left.
What size is she?
I mean if she is reducing from say, a size 18 plus, then that is fine.

esk1mo · 29/11/2017 00:39

no, probably less than 700-800 calories

Ttbb · 29/11/2017 00:39

Given the quality of the food your friend is right. There is nothing healthy in that list, the less she eats of it the better.

Fluffywhitecloud · 29/11/2017 00:41

Sorry I should have mentioned, she was a size 12 before and now she's wearing 10s but they're starting to look baggy again.

That's definitely true that most people eat far too much though!

ttbb Grin c'mon there was tomatoes in the soup and vegetables in the spring rolls.
So far today I have had two ham sandwiches and a celery stalk, plus black tea. Not trying to lose weight just poor.

pemberleypearl · 29/11/2017 00:42

I'd be worried about her commenting she felt "too disgusting" to eat more.

custarddinosaur · 29/11/2017 00:42

she felt too disgusting to eat any more

You're right to be concerned about your friend, this remark is worrying.

WorraLiberty · 29/11/2017 00:45

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that amount of food and assuming she's an adult, she's best placed to say whether or not it fills her up.

However saying she 'felt too disgusting to eat more' rather than she doesn't fancy eating more, sounds like she might have a bit of a problem.

Other than that, you sound like polar opposites if you think that soup, a spring roll, 5 chips (can't believe you counted them!) and some prawn crackers is not enough to fill someone up.

It might not be enough to fill you up and that's fair enough, but that doesn't mean it's the same for everybody.

TheFishInThePot · 29/11/2017 00:55

The last time I lost a good amount of weight I was very aware that it could go back on again. Your friend probably is not used to being full at the moment and probably has a worry about the weight going back, possibly trying to loose a bit more before she chills out.
That type of food would be concerning if she doesn't want to undo her hard work.

Ollivander84 · 29/11/2017 01:12

It all depends. If I'm doing a fast day, then it might be 500-800 cals that day which if I was eating with friends wouldn't be a vast amount of food as the stuff listed is high in cals
I have to cut my calories fairly drastically to lose weight so a day for me might be

Banana pancake, Greek yoghurt, strawberries
Warburtons thin with ham and salad
protein shake post gym

If you translate those cals into chinese food, it's not a lot at all!

oldlaundbooth · 29/11/2017 01:31

Is a fairly crap diet, not surprised she didn't eat much!

Ginkypig · 29/11/2017 01:44

It's about balance though isn't it.

Eating that type of food all the time = unhealthy

Eating tiny portions like you've described all the time = unhealthy

Having a balanced diet all week then a day of food like that (in a decent portion) = healthy

Having a so so diet all week so deciding to only have a small portion of obviously unhealthy food = healthy.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 29/11/2017 01:49

Has something prompted your friend to lose weight, OP?

kmc1111 · 29/11/2017 01:59

It's not that much volume-wise, though it's not exactly meagre either. But it is all fairly junky, so as far as calories go it'll have been plenty so long as she also ate something in the morning and isn't especially tall or sporty. Low balling it I'd say she ate at least 750-800 calories in front of you, probably more like 1000+ given how calorific even really basic Chinese takeout soups and rolls can be.

Also as far as the 'too disgusting to eat more' comment goes, if she's been eating healthy for a while now she probably will have felt pretty gross after those meals. If you eat pretty 'clean' for even a few weeks, going back to sugary treats and takeout can make you feel a bit sick/icky after the first few (delicious) bites.

WorraLiberty · 29/11/2017 08:51

Is a fairly crap diet, not surprised she didn't eat much!

It was just lunch and dinner though on that day. The OP doesn't say she eats like that all the time.

Plus there's nothing wrong with soup and bread.
