To suggest that people unfamiliar with the Northern Ireland conflict watch an episode of ‘Pop Goes Northern Ireland’ on iPlayer?

I’m starting this by presuming you can watch BBC NI programmes in the rest of the UK?

Pop Goes Northern Ireland is a series looking at news footage from the Troubles year by year soundtracked (rather than narrated) by songs from that year. Tonight was about 1988 - dozens and dozens of murders - murders of innocents of all ages, state murders of IRA members, bomb attacks on school children, grenade attacks on funerals and the savage event where two soldiers were dragged from a car and shot in broad daylight. Total and utter horror on all sides involved. No winners.

Someone on a Brexit thread the other day mentioned that it ‘wouldn’t be ideal’ for trouble to flare up in NI again following Brexit and that breathtaking lack of insight made me post this.

Get a snapshot of what it was like living through this year after year after year (1988 wasn’t even ‘that bad’ relative to the 70’s etc). Recent history on your own doorstep.

It was an autocorrect

Sure it was........

The fact that you don't understand why anyone 'gives a toss' about calling it 'Southern Ireland' and think it's 'petty' shows that this:

And yet ironically I’m far more aware and experienced than most Irish locals here that I know

is utter bollocks.

Start by getting the name of the country you live in correct and you might start to break down the 'arrogant and ignorant English person' stereotype.

Any more books/ films people recommend to learn about the Ireland?

Has anyone seen the Loach films, The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Jimmy's Hall? The former is about the war of independence and hard hitting, the latter is more left wing.

One window on Ireland for me was the 'The Late Late Show' with Gay Byrne.
It used to be shown on british TV in the late 80s and 90s. Lovely long conversations and he got some stunning guests on. I see he sometimes gets a mixed press, but I loved those shows.

What a bunch of petty nitpicking nasty posters you are. Glad you are not politically in charge of any decisions regarding Ireland or anywhere else. A pack of dogs and bitchy horrible mentality. You should be ashamed.

I actually wrote a pretty balanced post adding to what I thought was a mature debate. It’s more serious than pouncing like a pack of hyenas on one poster. I’ll leave some of you to it.

Wow Endofsummer you're pretty specialist.

tinysparklyshoes · 01/12/2017 09:44

It wasn't remotely balanced, it was rude and ignorant and arrogant.

Nice hysterical whining at us for saying so though. Hmm

CheshireSplat · 02/12/2017 00:21

Thanks OP for highlighting this. I've just watched the 1972 episode. I'm not quite sure what to say - it wasn't easy TV. I wish it was compulsory watching.

bearstrikesback · 02/12/2017 10:35

I have been watching it with DH (English) who is genuinely shocked and also made the comparison to Syria. Personally I think it should be showing on BBC2 to get as wide an audience as possible.

Julie8808 tried to derail the "In the news" thread about the border, so probably best to ignore.

It's a good idea to remind people just how terrible things were during the "Troubles". The only problem is that the people who didn't care then won't care now.

One of my best friends in university in Dublin was vehemently pro-IRA, felt that all the violence was justified and there was no talking to him at all. As a child, he had a friend killed by a plastic bullet and blamed the British soldiers for everything.

So many children of the time were forced to pick a side; those children are now in their 50's and 60's with children and grandchildren of their own, and the thought that we might go back to violence is horrific.

If May doesn't get off her arse, stop blaming Ireland and the EU for the decisions made by the people of the UK, and sort it out, I genuinely fear for the future.

Hi there,
This the first time I have seen a thread on Anything regarding the BBC 2 program, “Pop Goes Northern Ireland”. I have been a “fan” of this show since stumbling upon it back in 2014. Between 1971 and 1982 I visited NI 3 times and the ROI 2 times. My memories of those days were positive. Nothing crazy happened. I wonder if this program has ended. By my count the years not covered are 2000 and 2001. Unless the writers are going to cover pre 1963 or post 2002. I will keep my eyes peeled.

Ontheboardwalk · 26/01/2020 20:46

Appreciate this is a zombie thread but we were talking about this programme over Christmas at work

There are 30 odd episodes on iPlayer. I’m finding it easier to watch them in year order rather than the random order of the different series.

USAz666 · 06/02/2020 13:50

I also watch them in yearly order. In addition I edited the subtitles by moving them to the top of the screen. I found it difficult to follow the story text with the subtitles turned on.
