To take job....

Long story short, I've been offered an internal promotion. It's a big leap in terms of responsibility, much larger team. 25% of the job role I've never done before and it's outside my comfort zone. Company is great to work for, great pay etc. But for this there would be limited support, as I'd be the only one in company doing this type of work. I'd also need to start taking it all very seriously. It's not a job I'd ever consider applying for.
Do I accept? Or do I decline and keep my well paid no responsibility role?
I'm 45 if that makes a difference.

I would. But that doesn't help you. I like to progress and challenge myself, and look for salary increases.

mishfish · 28/11/2017 21:08

Would they offer you any forms of external support? Arranging and paying for training, courses, seminars etc?

redexpat · 28/11/2017 21:09

Take it!

Wolfcub · 28/11/2017 21:13

Will it make you happy? Does your current role make you happy?

Neverender · 28/11/2017 21:16

Does it make you excited!? If so, I say go for it!

Madonnasmum · 28/11/2017 21:19

I love my current job, but this step up would mean I'm managing others who need structure and management which I can provide and pretty keen to get my teeth into. That falls into the 75% of the job I can do. It's the 25% part that holds me back. It's budget and forecasting, I'll get a handover from the person leaving and that's more or less it.

It would depend how much more the salary was. If it was a lot of extra responsibility for not much more money then I would not take it.

ApplesTheHare · 28/11/2017 21:23

If the thought excites you and the increase in pay feels right for the increase in responsibility I'd jump at the chance. You can always find inspiration/learning resources/support by networking outside your own company, especially online Smile

I just never dreamt I'd be offered it. Ive been mulling it over since i heard about the opportunity but I didn't really expect it. I'm enjoying the thrill of being recognised as being suitable. I've been over promoted before, years ago, and it wasn't an enjoyable experience. That's holding me back now.

I was in a similar position and took it.
If you ever want to progress further in the same company and you then this down you most likely won’t get a chance with them again.

Madonnasmum · 28/11/2017 21:26

Good advice re pay increase. I think it's about 10% increase. Is that good?

PerpendicularVincent · 28/11/2017 21:27

I'd definitely take it. I recently took a promotion in similar circumstances and love it. Sieze the day Grin

MrTrebus · 28/11/2017 21:28

Take it! And do a long detailed handover from the person who's leaving and then just copy everything they did in that 25%! If it ain't broke don't fix it and excel at the 75%.

Iprefercoffeetotea · 28/11/2017 21:28

I think it depends on how supportive you think your company is and who your new line manager will be.

I would not take a job unless I knew I could do every aspect from it well from day one. I've had too many bad experiences with company culture that throws you in at the deep end, lets you sink, doesn't help you to swim, and then complains.

People often say you grow into a new role. That may well be, but you need the supportive culture for that to be the case.

I'd keep the role I was happy in and which was well paid.

But you are not me.

OhWhatToChoose · 28/11/2017 21:29

If it's budgeting then you will hopefully have an accounts team or person who will be able to offer some guidance. I'd never done it before and I'm now partly responsible for a budget in the high six figures and it's part of my role to keep things on budget.

You can google masses if you have excel issues and it basically comes down to common sense. If you already like doing stats and spreadsheets it will come quickly to you.

If you do have an accounts team or person they will be reviewing all budgets and will likely query anything that doesn't make sense.

Go for it and good luck.

Madonnasmum · 28/11/2017 21:30

Yes, if I turn this down now I'll be written off forever more.

Then definitely go for it. I got a bad four day handover so did a lot of flying by the seat of my pants but with total back up from the boss!

Peoniesandcats · 28/11/2017 21:53

Congratulations! Take it & do some budget/forecasting learning if you need. Once you're doing the job I bet it will be a breeze for you!
