AIBU to rage at a colleague

He's a total moron, people think the sun shines out of his ass, he also kisses it.

His background isn't based in our subject area and this infuriates me, is given preferential treatment and rewards, he is clueless about IT stuff which can be useful in our subject. Loves to make it known when he's achieved something, mansplains, interrupts conversations, sticks his nose in, and talks over you.

We deal with a client who employs interns, continuously he rages the moment an e-mail from them comes in, shouts and swears, hits the table, boss just ignores it as he's spineless anyway.

AIBU to rage at him the next time he does it (probably within the next half hour) and say, your life must be easy if you choose get so angry about a CLIENT double checking something?

Oh gosh! I am awfully sorry. Did it take you a terribly longtime to work out those minor typos? I hadn't realised some people would find it so hard to work out a single letter substitution. It's not something I have ever struggled with personally. As I say it must be my superior intellect.

Definitely don't blow, you can't take his behaviour to grievance level, if you exhibit the same.

Report the banging, swearing etc.

If he's only a colleague then stop him in his tracks when he tries to talk over you. An "excuse me, I haven't finished" is perfectly acceptable. Cut him off when the mansplaining starts, again it's acceptable to point out that he is being patronising. If he sticks his nose in, have good professional sentences to let him know it isn't needed.

I used to sing "You're a gobshite, you're a gobshite" football chant style in my head until one colleague stopped talking. It helped, massively.

Wow, you really are being a GF aren't you Zip?! We're not exactly writing a bloody thesis here on MN, we're just typing in posts in between other tasks, sometimes on a phone with the usual mistakes that can happen (stooped IPhones and their annoying virtual keyboards....)

Moosical - don't, whatever you do, lower yourself to his level. In fact, do the opposite. Icy calm, stop speaking and just give him a dead eye stare if he interrupts, and then finish with a glacial 'you were quite done interrupting me now?' and continue with what you are saying. Or a glacial stare and a 'are you quite finishing having your tantrum now so that I can get on with my work', and then turn back to your work and ignore the evil glares he tries to give you to rile you up further.

NBU but don't rage back. It won't help, ask him to pipe it down a bit and it might be worth asking or checking your intranet for a policy on office etiquette. A must for shared offices and open plan.

If there is no improvement speak to your boss. Feel for you, a noisy/disruptive office share can make working very difficult - and grate on the nerves.

Unfortunately we all (or most of us) have to work with morons. Morons who shout and bang the desk are particularly irritating but don't lower yourself to his level by "raging" or it may well backfire on you. Remember the George Bernard Shaw quote: "I learned long ago never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it".

I'd ignore him where possible. If it gets too much, remove your headphones, give him a disparaging look and say "is this behaviour really necessary?" and put your headphones back on and carrying on working.

What a hideous working environment. You need to complain directly to him each and every time he behaves inappropriately. Get your other colleagues on board and also complain to your boss.

zipTies is a troll who NC's every day. Yesterday zipTies was Michaela74. The GF responses are in the same style. Don't rise to it. Like a naughty child, zipTies is just attention-seeking. Ignore the juvenile behaviour and he/she will get bored and fuck off...

OP, I understand. I worked with someone like this. You have to treat him the same as zipTies. He's an attention seeker who is enjoying the drama. You just have to ignore it.

YANBU. I've had a colleague like this. It is not conducive to a healthy work environment. He left and it was like a breath of fresh air swept through the office and everyone now agrees how awful he was. His replacement is lovely and hard working and we adore her so are making every effort to make her stay forever Grin.

*Yes, I'm aware that was a run-on sentence.

I think from everyone's opinions I shouldn't lower myself to his level so I would be unreasonable to do this, in my own interests.

I'm glad of sorts that some of you can relate, it does pertain to a stressful environment and when I have deadlines it does make it harder to concentrate. I just feel I cannot complain due to manager's track record and the fact it appears this behaviour is 'normal' and accepted from this colleague.
