NC as very outing! I will soon finish a 9 year long stint of work and study, and to celebrate my freedom (i.e. not having to study evenings and weekends ever again), my DH and I have decided to go somewhere, anywhere, for a period of 5 weeks, in autumn 2018 (we're in the UK).

We have been thinking Hawaii, 'do' all 4 of the main islands. He's quite set on it but I'm being indecisive..! My main worry (not really an appropriate word but ykwim) is that our budget is 'only' around £7500. This would need to include everything (flights, car hire, food etc.) for the both of us (no DC).

I did the maths and I know that we can go to Hawaii on that but we'd have to be very careful (airbnbs, cook our own food, only pick a couple of big budget adventures, and spend the rest of our time hiking and snorkelling). Imo we might be better off going to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Things are so cheap out there that we'd never really feel we'd have to budget all the time.

Where I really want to go is Galapagos or Bora Bora but I know that the budget most definitely won't stretch to that!

So I wanted to ask, if you had 5 weeks and £7750, where would you go? Inspire me! We love adventure, diving, sun, good food, nature and meeting people!

This isn't a stealth boast, we've pretty much been looking forward to this and saving for it for a good few years, scrimping and saving on everything else Smile

beast oh yes, the mossies! But nothing like cracking open a cold bottle of whatever beer was in the fridge while sitting outside the dive shop filling in your logbook. Happy days!

Scabbersley · 28/11/2017 16:33

personally I wouldn't want to fly long-haul only to land in an English-speaking country

Confused diving in Australia is amazing. Lots of the landscape is amazing. Just because they speak English doesn't make it the same as Widnes Hmm

Theimpossiblegirl · 28/11/2017 16:34

I'd go to SE Asia or New Zealand and some Pacific Islands (The Cooks are amazing).
You could stretch your budget with Airbnb or even Trustedhousesitters.com (look after a cat for a few days- stay in a house free).
Do let us know what you decide so we can live vicariously though you.

Canada or Alaska for me. Definitely a whale watching trip. Or a cruise...

LexieLulu · 28/11/2017 16:40

Africa or India, safaris.

India you can do safaris in goa, stay for a couple of weeks then travel to Sri Lanka.

Or Caribbean

LexieLulu · 28/11/2017 16:41

Or a friend of mine did Thailand, but staying in little island hotels and travelling via boat to the next island did their next stay.

Katedotness1963 · 28/11/2017 16:42

Actually, I've seen very little of the U.K. I might rent a motor home and drive the coast.

marcopront · 28/11/2017 17:02

A road trip I would love to do is the Pan American Highway. Alaska to Panama then cross the Darién gap and carry on to the bottom of Argentina. A total of 19 000 miles.

goose1964 · 28/11/2017 17:06

I would hire a motorhome and go around Canada

Highpeak · 28/11/2017 17:15

Another vote for going to galapagos now, it's only going to get more expensive.
With your timescale you can afford flexibility. We went during an extended backpacking trip in South America. We didn't book the Galapagos until we arrived in Quito where it was a lot cheaper (1k each ish). While based in Quito we also took a 4 day trip to the amazon and went up a volcano. There's loads to do in Ecuador and the mainland is pretty cheap.

Drinaballerina · 28/11/2017 17:19

South America for me, never done it but would live to. Or aus/nz.

Changednamejustincase · 28/11/2017 17:34

I would get an apartment in the centre of Paris and have the 5 weeks of my life. Museums, galleries, food, wine. I'm away to start saving.

YoloSwaggins · 28/11/2017 17:55

diving in Australia is amazing. Lots of the landscape is amazing.

Yes, I know the scenery there is amazing but scenery in Taiwan, or for example the mountains in Guilin, or Lake Baikal in Siberia is also stunning plus you get the added bonus of experiencing a very different culture.

Also, the flight to Australia/NZ would be too long for me lol - I'm terrible with sleeping on planes and jet lag as it is.

nooka · 28/11/2017 18:04

For adventure, and with five weeks to play with I'd look at SE Asia or South/Central America. Going to Hawaii seems like a bit of a waste of the opportunity. We had a two week holiday in Hawaii and it was really nice but not amazing, mainly because it is basically America so culturally not very interesting. Plus as we now live in Canada it's a bit of a cheap beach holiday (because the cost of getting there is cheap).

If you'd really like to go to the Galapagos I'd do more research on that and see if it's possible.

MoNigheanDonn · 28/11/2017 18:16

Dh says he would travel around Asia - Thailand and Vietnam. He has been to Thailand before and says it is very cheap (or was in 2005) and stunningly beautiful in parts.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 28/11/2017 18:20

South Africa Namibia and Botswana. Stunning. 5 weeks would make a great trip!

TheNaze73 · 28/11/2017 18:25

Australia, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea.

madamginger · 28/11/2017 18:35

We spent £8k on a 2 week five star holiday to Greece for six last summer.
If I had that money again I would love to travel round Asia. Maybe India, sri Lanka and a trip to the Maldives at the end.

JingleBellTime · 28/11/2017 19:04

Disclaimer: I have only read page 1 and 12.

I love Hawaii and the US and have been many times, Hawaii is wonderful and each island is different. My 5 week trip would be something like
Fly to LA - see the sights
Fly to Oahu - the most commercial island
Fly to Kauai - which is the garden island
Fly to Maui - the tourist island
Fly to Big Island - the real Hawaii
Fly to San Francisco - see the sights
Fly to New York - see the sights
Fly home
You could easily leave off Maui and Kauai which are the more expensive
However your budget is tight for this.

If I had your dilema and could go late enough I think I'd go to New Zealand, it is just wonderful, with maybe a stopover each way or a trip out to the Cook Islands or Fiji.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 28/11/2017 19:07

South east Asia, wherever you go, enjoy, it sounds like an amazing opportunity

AnneElliott · 28/11/2017 19:42

I'd do a 5 week cruise or New Zealand. We went to Hawaii for 1 week and then went into New Zealand. I don't think I'd spend 5 weeks in Hawaii.

Ignore the few miserables guys having a go at you. I spent £7k on Disney last year - it does not go far on holiday!

Dontforgetyourtowel · 28/11/2017 20:11

Oh wow thanks so much, my DH and I have our work cut out researching all these options! Smile I will definitely keep you posted Smile

Thanks for a lovely thread OP, I have just spent a happy half hour in Nero's reading it and dreaming.

My dream trip would involve train travel, either a train through the Canadian Rockies, or a long trip on the Trans Siberian Express, not everyone's taste I know!

LearnFromThePast · 28/11/2017 20:37

I would also do Asia. We worked in South Korea for a year and want to see more of that part of the world. Some parts are more expensive than others but you could have a nice time with that kind of money

SavageBeauty73 · 28/11/2017 20:42

Thailand. Love it.
