to not want bloody music everywhere I go

MarklahMarklah · 28/11/2017 10:05

I'm not talking a fanfare that precedes me or anything, but the fact that any shop or public space (apart from parks) I go into have to have music on. All. The. Bloody. Time.
Even the local charity shops now "have to have music" they tell me.
I don't want to listen to music. If I wanted to do that I'd stay home with my CD's or go to a gig. If I'm shopping I want to shop. I need to think about what I'm buying not have my ears blasted with some awful caterwauling.

I am wondering if I could start a campaign?

And don't get me started on Christmas music in shops.

OP posts:

I totally agree. When my DD asks for music on in MY car, I can't bear it! It's the only place where i can control the silence.

YADNBU

MrsA2015 · 28/11/2017 10:09

Totally agree. I could barely hear myself talk yesterday in Asda. I’ve always wondered how long before they play it on public transport too. I find it really invasive especially when I’m trying to avoid most of the songs played due to sexual nature.

paperandpaint · 28/11/2017 10:10

I know!! I went into a really lovely coffee shop yesterday and the radio was blaring out - arrgh! I don't mind the kind and the volume of music that they have in Starbucks or Cafe Nero but the radio is awful.

MrsJayy · 28/11/2017 10:11

Oh god I was in boots yesterday the assistant could barely hear me over the frickin music apparently staff have complai ned but no joy as it comes from head office.

SlowlyShrinking · 28/11/2017 10:13

It annoys me because Music in shops seems to be generally louder than it used to be and it drowns out the music in my headphones Shock

overnightangel · 28/11/2017 10:14

Totally agree, I’m sat in dentist waiting area and there’s no fucking escape.
I’m about to have a hole in my tooth filled in, I could do without hearing the “soothing” strains of (insert name of non descript whiney piano-led singer/songwriter here)

shouldnthavesaid · 28/11/2017 10:16

I noticed that in Paperchase hell the other day. Christmas music at full volume. I asked the assistant if it bothers her, she said she didn't notice. We used to pop the radio on at work (hospital), I look back now and wonder how OK that was ...

NerrSnerr · 28/11/2017 10:16

I like music being on places but I can’t stand places that have local crappy radio like Heart FM with all the adverts and depressing music.

Domani · 28/11/2017 10:23

YADNBU. I once worked in a pub which won an award for being a quiet pub (just very quiet background instrumental music) It was bliss and the atmosphere was great because everyone could hear each other.

Domani · 28/11/2017 10:26

Oh, and it didn't stop young people coming in, place was full of young people chatting away.

TheVanguardSix · 28/11/2017 10:27

Thank you!

I hate the sensory assault of a world I live in (London). The music kills me. I just hate how loudly we live now.
I took the kids to an ice cream parlour in Hammersmith and it was like a fecking rave at 3:30pm. Never again.

Incitatus · 28/11/2017 10:29

I’m autistic and the constant noise of music everywhere causes me constant stress Sad

I was in Halfords the other day trying to find a dashcam holder for my car and they had the radio blaring out of an overhead speaker. My brain just froze and wouldn’t work. I was staring at these different boxes of holders and nothing would compute. I told the assistant she’d have to find one for my phone type as I just couldn’t concentrate. I was embarrassed and very stressed.

I buy as much as I can online now just to avoid the shops. I don’t know why they have to do it, it’s awful. It’s also very disability unfriendly for people with hearing difficulties, sensory difficulties etc. It’s another way of forcing some disabled people out of public spaces.

Postagestamppat · 28/11/2017 10:32

The car park in ikea was playing music. Why do you need music in a car park?

MiraiDevant · 28/11/2017 10:35

Agree OP. I was in Starbucks Friday trying to have a quick post-meeting debrief over a coffee. Noise so loud we couldn't hear each other unless shouting.

I worked in a supermarket when I was a teenager. The Christmas Tape played ten songs. Over. And Over. And over - from November until January!!! Grin (Yes one was Wizard, one was Slade, one was The Little Drummer Boy...)

upperlimit · 28/11/2017 10:35

I can't stand it. Music can be annoying but the hell that it radio, grown adults with their self congratulatory bantz and general arsing around, bends my brain. It's like it won't stay in the background - it's right up in your face, and it's everywhere.

MiraiDevant · 28/11/2017 10:38

Although - to be fair - does anyone remember the hush of a department store in the Old Days where you dare not breathe? Or of a furniture store? Especially if you were the only customer! I can see that a bit of background can play a role.

Domani · 28/11/2017 10:39

Even the gp's waiting room now! Started off quiet and over the months has got louder and louder. Dh asked receptionist to turn it down because I was feeling really poorly, but she refused saying everyone else likes it. It was radio with news bulletins.

redexpat · 28/11/2017 10:41

Im not autistic but I find it stresses me out. I have more difficulty concentrating on what Im doing.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/11/2017 10:41

Meh I like it.

I was at IKEA twice this weekend (don’t ask!) and don’t remember music in the carpark or the shop. Mind you my hearing is generally quite poor anyway.

redexpat · 28/11/2017 10:43

Oh the GPs have it on to try and protect confidentiality. It makes it more difficult to overhear conversations at receptions. Or thats what Ive been told anyway.

Ttbb · 28/11/2017 10:47

YANBU. The only kind of music I can tollerate these days (severely sleep deprived) is very, very quiet simple piano classic/jazz music. Anything else whether it's rock of opera or what not makes my head hurt. It's not because I don't like it it's because I just cannot deal with the constant noise. Very quiet and simple music can create an undercurrent for the ordinary noise in shops and help to harmonise the sound but if you put on any thing more attention grabbing it's just yet another noise that you are forced to listen to.

MickeyLuv · 28/11/2017 10:47

Yes, I was also told in the Pharmacy and Student Services at University that they have the TV on to protect peoples privacy when discussing things at the counter.

PumpkinSquash · 28/11/2017 10:48

Wear earplugs?
Jeez, there's some joyless fun sponges on MN this morning. Grin
What with hating on weddings, now we've moved onto music being dared to be played.
What next? Firing squad for anyone dancing or singing or daring to look too happy?
Meh. Bring on Slade and Wizzard.
"IT'S CHRISTMASSSSSSSS!"

Namechangetempissue · 28/11/2017 10:49

I like it. Passes the time in a waiting room and I don't have to listen to other people's conversation, and makes a supermarket trip more enjoyable for me. I understand it isn't for everyone though!

ofshoes · 28/11/2017 10:52

Loath this with a burning passion. Music is one of the most important things in my life but it being everywhere gives me the fucking rage. It completely devalues music and makes it worthless. It saddens me that something which should be beautiful has become another cheap trick to try to get us to buy more tat/drink more booze in the pub.
