Nativity disappointment

Name changed because I really don't want to be that mum but ..... my 6 year old daughter was so desperate to be an angel in the school nativity. They had auditions at the end of last week - she didn't get a part - her closest friends did but we've talked about how not everyone can always have parts etc etc. I've played it down but today she comes home with letter saying she is one of the singers and to wear black jumper and black tights or trousers. She is just so sad. I can't think of anything less Christmassy!
AIBU to think they couldn't have made all the singers angels??? Or stars??? Anything but black jumper and trousers??

Are you sure they aren't stars or similar?
We've told our singers to wear black tops and tights because that is the base, the other staff and I have spent hours making masks and head bands for them and huge cardboard stars because our singers are being the flocks of sheep for the shepherds to watch, then they are reindeer later on, then a choir of angels and then stars. we felt 4 costumes was a bit much to ask parents for and wanted to make sure everybody had the same, easy to put on and off by themselves design.

Thanks everyone- I'd love to think there was more to it. Yes of course it will pass it's just disappointing because the Christmas play is huge in their little lives! It's a school in the North Sparkly - I would love to think the singers would be more than just black top and tights!

Perhaps it's because not every parent can afford new clothes or costume for the nativity.

EduCated · 28/11/2017 22:51

Hopefully they'll be jazzing it up.

Also I was an angel every bloody year from R to Y6. The curse of being a blonde child. I'd have killed to be a singer Grin

I remember one year one of my children along with his class were all Peter Pan, the following year my daughter's class were Peter Pan, great I thought I can resuse the costume, but oh no we weren't allowed to use Peter Pan costumes that year because a "main" Peter Pan had been cast so the rest had to wear just green leggings. The main Peter was was allowed to wear a costume. The fact I had to go out and spend more money peed me off more than anything but try finding green leggings anywhere!

notthatmum · 28/11/2017 23:03

I've had to buy black leggings and black top - same price as a costume

I feel for your dd, and i know it's hard to see your child disappointed.
But disappointment is such an every day part of life, it's good for her to learn to cope with it in situations that won't matter to her in a few months time.

I’ve just stretched 12 main ‘costumed’ parts into 26 so that everyone gets a dressy up, speaking part!!
