Why do so many women care about celebs' personal lives?

Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan Meghan ... that's all I can see trending on the right side. I mean men do plenty of celeb worshiping but it's pretty much limited to athletes and they don't give a shit about their personal lives. Why do zillions of women care about celebs and who's getting married, who's cheating, who's had botox, who's preggo??? Confused

  1. Because I like to see what people are wearing and how they do their hair etc. (shallow)
  1. Because I like to live vicariously through them. I’m never going to marry a dodgy taxi driver, go through an acrimonious divorce, advertise frozen food, struggle publicly with drink and drugs and have turbulent relationships with strange men, but I’m happy to let Kerry Katona do it for me.
  1. Because I like sniggering at Z listers (shallow again!)
  1. Because lots of women, even those in sensible big girl careers, like talking about this sort of stuff. Not in a hero worshipping way, in a sniggering way (see above). It is a hilarious icebreaker in my experience!

I think the only answer you're allowed to use here without being jumped on by the more vocal posters is "social conditioning". Any other answer is misogyny.

I don't (care about celebrity private lives) much.

I would quite like to see the monarchy fail, though.

Is that alright with you? Can we all get either handstamps or bans now and get on with what we were posting frivolously about?

Escapism.

She really polled very low on approval last week. Possibly unprecedented.

I don't especially care about celebrities' personal lives. I hadn't anything more than the dimmest awareness that Prince Harry was dating an actress until this week.

I do feel perfectly entitled to comment on a thread about somebody famous though, if I believe people are talking misogynistic horseshit about them, because it's unsisterly and undermining to all of us when other women are judged in a way that men aren't.

I don’t find celebrities interesting. When I was in my twenties I liked to read Heat magazine but as I’ve got older I’ve become less bothered. I actually find celebrity worship really irritating and have to remind myself that it’s each to their own!

I find the fact that grown men actually read The Sun in public - where other people can see them reading it! - way, way more unfathomable than the fact that some women enjoy a bit of celeb gossip.

The Sun is just embarrassing, and marks a person out in a very negative way. And yet, a sizeable cohort of men continue to read it.

Go figure....
