Funeral attire and what's socially acceptable?

MsHopey · 27/11/2017 13:12

So, I have a funeral to attend tomorrow. There for moral support for my husband and his family as i never met the family member who has passed.
I checked my wardrobe and my only black items of clothing show a lot of boob. I did buy a dress off eBay but lots of messing around off the seller and it hasn't arrived. Payday isn't till friday and I'm on a short time frame and an even shorter budget.
So, I'm now wondering if the black item I own is possible to get away with. It is a black velvet strapless dress. I'd wear it with tights and boots and a velvet coat. So now I'm wondering is it too much cleavage, or too gothic for a funeral as at this point I am running out of options but don't want to embarrass my husband.
Aibu to wear the suggested outfit?

Any colour is better than boobs on show. Not exactly rocket science.

IHeartDodo · 27/11/2017 13:37

Could you borrow something? maybe a colleague/friend/neighbour would lend you something?
I went to my grandad's funeral wearing clothes from the neighbour, we didn't have many black clothes as kids.

Clovertoast · 27/11/2017 13:39

Just wear the skirt and tights with a dark top. It doesn't have to be black.
Please dont wear the " booby " top though. You'll end up the talk of the funeral Shock

Whinesalot · 27/11/2017 13:40

Any plain top will be fine with a black skirt, especially with a muted cardigan/coat. You don't need to all be dark.

MsHopey · 27/11/2017 13:40

My husband seems to think there's nothing wrong with boobs. Even though I was sure it was the right idea.
I have found a black wool pencil skirt and a jersey type material black shirt dress. It's a bit long but should tuck into the skirt okay :)

Doesn't have to be black just sombre. So grey, navy, dark purple is fine.

kateandme · 27/11/2017 13:41

have you got a vest or darker t-shirt or shirt to wear under the vest so that covering the boobage.
or anything lace you can cut and semi sew in the cleavage onto dress

TheLuminaries · 27/11/2017 13:41

Black isn't necessary for funerals any more, just smart & muted colours is fine. Too much boob in a strapless dress does not sound appropriate.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/11/2017 13:42

You don’t need a dark top. You have a dark skirt, tights and coat. Any colour shirt will be fine. It’s quite normal to wear a white/cream blouse.

SpiritedLondon · 27/11/2017 13:42

I've just had my dad's funeral. Outfits among the immediate family were predominantly navy, black and grey. I have absolutely no recollection about anyone else's outfits but I've no doubt I would have noticed someone in an evening dress. I would suggest a cardigan over the dress or anything " office" appropriate rather than the black otherwise.

TheEricaOlthwaiteGang · 27/11/2017 13:51

Just look reasonably smart and respectable. Don't overthink it.

munkynutts · 27/11/2017 13:53

Literally nobody is going to give a shit what you look like.

Why are you even buying a dress online?

Go to primark and buy cheap black skirt and shirt. Done.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 27/11/2017 13:56

Your update sounds good. I think that outfit sounds far better. Hope the funeral goes smoothly

Liiinoo · 27/11/2017 13:59

In the circles I move in (Catholic , mostly Irish) there are a lot of funerals to attend! IME respectful/conservative trumps black, so that would rule out your strapless dress. A dark skirt and tights with any blouse or top you would wear for a job interview would be perfect. And remember there can be a lot of standing around /walking over rough ground if it is a burial so wear shoes or boots that can cope with gravel and grass.

I still remember a funeral nearly 30 years ago when a close family member wore her only black outfit. It was more suitable for clubbing in and she stood out like a sore thumb. Nothing was said (that I know of anyway) but she was clearly uncomfortable and freezing cold all day.

NO. Do not add to the disposable fashion mountain ending up in landfill. This is what charity shops are for.

Doilooklikeatourist · 27/11/2017 14:08

I wore a grey dress to my dads funeral , my cousin wore a navy skirt and top
It doesn’t have to be all black there’s days
Grey , navy , dark trousers and a top in a pale colour will be fine

YouNosyTwat · 27/11/2017 14:14

I wouldn't wear a strapless party dress unless I could cover up the top half and the bottom half was quite somber and smart.
Literally anything that's just a plain/dark/muted colour will be better than an eyeful of boob.
I don't wear black so I used to struggle to find something so I bought a black fitted dress and it is my funeral attire. I've had it years now and I've worn it, unfortunately, quite often.

IceFall · 27/11/2017 14:15

I'd go for any other somber colour smart item of clothing over a booby velvet dress!

Sprogletsmuvva · 27/11/2017 14:26

Think smart-ish job interview clothing and you won’t go far wrong. I suspect black being ‘traditional ‘ is like many other allegedly traditional things: actually confined to a certain time and class (historically, poor people wouldn’t have been able to afford sets of clothes they rarely wore).

And yy to hitting the charity shops. An outfit you can wear to formal-ish occasions (low-key wedding s, graduations, court appearances etc) is always worth having.

scrabbler3 · 27/11/2017 14:35

I'm glad you have sorted something out, OP. The strapless dress would have been unsuitable.

carefreeeee · 27/11/2017 14:36

Wear a white blouse dark skirt/trousers and dark cardigan. People don't wear black shirts to funerals. Unless they are goths possibly.

More important to be sober and inconspicuous than to be all in black. Strapless velvet sounds completely inappropriate even with a scarf

blueskyinmarch · 27/11/2017 15:02

I wore navy to my MIL funeral. It was fine. Any dark sombre colour will work.

spidey66 · 27/11/2017 15:26

I don't think the 'wear black' is written in stone these days. I think if it was a choice between 'inappropriate black' and 'appropriate other colour' I'd go for the appropriate other colour.
