AIBU to think Sainsbury's got really bad?

I'm from ROI but go "up North" shopping from time to time (it's almost over the corner so closer and easier to reach than some other big shopping centres). I used to love Sainsbury's because I used to buy good quality stuff there as a treat for Christmas.
I was there on Saturday and left disappointed. Even felt like local Lidl and Aldi provide better quality and selection of various delicacies than Sainsbury's.
AIBU to think Sainsbury's went down quality-wise or did other supermarkets simply improve and Sainsbury's just remain where they were 10 years ago?

Tesco is much cheaper, but variable in quality. Sainsburys was higher quality in general, but the quality has fallen recently, their chicken breasts and whole chickens are shockingly bad. Tesco removed a lot of their lines, but is miles better and much cheaper than sainsburys.

I find sainsbury's food really expensive now. I live near one and pop down if I run out of something I need but mainly shop at an Aldi near work. I wince at the prices and quality wise there is no noticeable difference to Aldi. The clothes are good quality for the price though if you find something you like (particularly when they have 25% off promotions). Asda is really dire.

The Newry sainsburys is woeful, I popped in to get a few bits for tea last weekend and couldn't find any of my usual treats I get at our local. Apparently our store is making a loss and is only staying open to keep a presence against tesco, we have a big selection of tu but not much food. I refuse to go to tesco though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/11/2017 19:59

I shop at Waitrose online & can't believe sainsburys prices. You can't go in there without spending £10 at least.

Of course they are making a loss, they are half empty with shitty offers. Not sure what's happening there but there you go. I prefer Supervalu, they have good offers and still have the Superquinn sausages as far as I know.

Morrisons

To be fair, they probably have the most number of things (meat and veg) that no other supermarket does. AFAIK no other supermarket sells pork crackling, hearts, flat iron steaks, and any number of exotic vegetables.

I gave up on most stuff at sainsburys when I noticed they were reducing the weight of some items while they kept the price the same. I found this sneaky.
also they did the same thing for delivery charge.
first it was free when I started with them and they started gradually increasing the charge.

I think all supermarkets are the same in this respect. And manufacturers ...

Lurkinghusband re Morrisons, depends where you are.
We have a tiny Morrisons in our small market town sells everything we need but nothing exotic.
Huge new Morrisons in nearby city with a significant migrant population. Sells an astonishing range of exotic veg and imported foods.

Love Morrisons. Especially their bakery. But I am an exiled Yorkshire Woman so biased.

LurkingHusband · 28/11/2017 08:30

Love Morrisons. Especially their bakery.

Except neither they (nor Tesco, Asda, Waitrose) do anything remotely similar to the baked-instore multiseeded loaf, which is divine.

Now if Panificio Italiano had a Midlands presence ....

Clandestino · 28/11/2017 19:37

Oh, for the bakery we have the best bakery in town so I'm not missing out on that.
Huge fluffy muffins, sourdough bread for half the price you pay in supermarkets and the quality is just about 500% better, cupcakes, Viennese, the most awesome cakes and their mince pies are the best ever. And they open at 7 so if you want a bread or sweet stuff just out of the oven, you just pop over and enjoy.

Can’t say I’m a Sainsbury’s fan but that’s because there’s virtually none by me. I have come across the small ones but they wouldn’t have the range to do a full shop. We have Tesco, M&S and Morrison’s nearby though
