To want to say something to manager

...about the fact I'm 95% sure he's using his phone to contact employees whilst in crawling motorway traffic?

He's supposed to be opening the store. He can't due to the traffic he's stuck in and has been sending pictures of the traffic, saying he's still on the motorway and ringing us to ask us to come in early to replace him. Whilst driving a car, albeit quite slowly.

So AIBU to be really annoyed he's so obviously using his phone on the motorway?

It pisses me off as a relative of mine has recently caused an accident (hit someone) via being on phone in crawling traffic. I know it's a motorway so less pedestrians but still...

He's blatantly not using hands free, we have screenshots, photos (clearly not taken with hands free) and he's using messaging apps which are not compatible with hands free.

Also annoys me that he thinks it's acceptable.

I wouldn't actually say anything to him, I'm not that stupid. But am I BU to be so irritated by this or am I being irrational? I do admittedly feel very strongly about using phones whilst driving.

Maybe my AIBU should be "AIBU to be annoyed to some people's relaxed attitude to texting/using phone whilst driving"

Oh for heaven's sake, if he's at a standstill then taking a photo really isn't dangerous at all. This just comes over as holier-than-thou unhelpful righteousness, creating aggravation without any sense or purpose.

If you're annoyed at being asked to come in early, then that's fine but it's a completely separate issue.

Sprogletsmuvva · 27/11/2017 09:46

Hmm, drivers on mobiles is normally a bugbear of mine (spend a lot of time on foot/bike, so at the sharp end of any driver inattention)...but in the scheme of things, this doesn’t sound like the worst.

IronFists234 · 27/11/2017 09:49

I didn't get asked to come in early. We have a group chat. Other people have been asked.

Also seen my above post- relative hit someone in standstill traffic after pulling off, person fell over, hit head and went to hospital. That's why I feel so strongly about it.

I feel it is unacceptable to use a phone in your car when the engine is on and you're on the road, full stop. Traffic or no traffic. People use their phones way too casually whilst driving, IMO.

Yes using a phone at 30ph over 10mph is more dangerous but both are irresponsible and present some danger.

@Collaborate

doubting and thanks for posting a link to prove my point.

The employer neither caused nor permitted. HTH

wasonthelist · 27/11/2017 12:16

juxta I applaud you but you (and possibly I) are trying to push a stone uphill against gangs of “compliance” wonks who can see plenty of unnecessary but lucrative “work” from trying to make ridiculous things happen.

wasonthelist · 27/11/2017 12:19

Btw mobile phone use in cars is unacceptable in my book. The Police could surely secure dozens of convictions daily if what I see every single day is the norm - there is a hardcore of people who don’t care.

TwigTheWonderKid · 27/11/2017 17:13

The OP says quite clearly that the traffic is NOT stationary but crawling i.e still moving.

munkynutts · 27/11/2017 17:26

I find it appalling you would shop someone like this. You sound nasty.

TwigTheWonderKid · 27/11/2017 17:30

Hang on, why is it nasty to draw to someone's attention the fact that they are doing something which is considered so dangerous that it has been made illegal?

OP I have absolutely no time for anyone who thinks it is acceptable to use their mobile phone illegally whilst driving and I totally get why you are disturbed by this.

Scuzzlet · 27/11/2017 18:22

Grass.

Willow2017 · 27/11/2017 18:46

If he has this problem every day why doesnt he leave earlier? Its not rocket science. I presume he is paid to manage not sit in traffic taking photos and trying to bully other staff to get to work earlier while he seems incapable of doing it himself?

EBearhug · 27/11/2017 21:00

No idea why choose bit of the country the OP is in, but round this way, the motorways were appalling this morning, more than one crash. You can't always leave enough spare time if things are that bad.

SilverySurfer · 27/11/2017 21:15

I would suggest you mind your own business. Worry about your own actions, his have nothing whatsoever to do with you.

Collaborate · 27/11/2017 23:03

@juxtaposition - if you read my first post on this thread you will see I said the employer may be vicariously liable. Not will be. I couldn’t possibly say whether the employer is aware or not, but it is possible that they are.
He is conducting company business on company time.
But of course you must have some inside knowledge if you’re so sure that the employer has no knowledge.

Oliversmumsarmy · 28/11/2017 08:10

How do you know the traffic was crawling and not at a standstill and he had taken his keys out of the ignition from a photo.

maxthemartian · 28/11/2017 08:13

These "grass" comments are ludicrous. Let's hope no-one here loses a loved one due to some twat using their phone while driving. It's illegal for a good reason.

Happyemoji · 28/11/2017 08:25

He was stuck in traffic so weren't driving. He was taking pictures of cats not moving so he was hardly driving love.

Happyemoji · 28/11/2017 08:25

Cars not moving

TheOriginalMagratGarlik · 28/11/2017 12:01

What @maxthemartian said.

When you are driving a car, you are in charge of between 1-3.5 tonnes of potentially lethal machinery. You should treat that with the respect it deserves. If you need to make a call, pull over to the side of the road, switch off the engine and make your call, or if on the motorway, pull into the next service station to make your calls and perhaps grab a coffee. If the traffic is moving that slowly, you are not going to lose much time by pulling off the road anyway.

Any of those posters saying "grass" been involved in a collision caused by a driver who was not paying attention on the road? I doubt it. If they had, they might have a better understanding of the potential conseqences.
