...where people knew what they were talking about or were open to learning.

The spaghetti monster is great to talk about theology. Unless you actually mean Christian theology only...

missyB1 · 25/11/2017 19:26

OP I totally agree but it’s never going to happen on any board except the philosophy / religion board.

brasty · 25/11/2017 19:27

And OP, Mumsnet is not the only chat board. If you want something you are not getting here, then look around.

Fffion I've been on a few threads in the religion/spirituality section and there's always people with defined views from all ends of the spectrum. Still good debate as long as you don't take it personally and leave the judgyness about emptiness at the door...

MissConductUS I will definitely do that, thank you! I'm always on the look out for a good brownie recipe Smile

You do understand that topics don't have walls, locked doors and secret passwords, don't you?

brasty · 25/11/2017 19:30

Also if people had to know what they are talking about before posting on MN, the forum would be very quiet.

Vitalogy · 25/11/2017 19:33

Have you tried the Religion/Philosophy section OP?

cariadlet · 25/11/2017 19:39

I take apply the scientific method to most ideas ie have a theory, test it against the evidence, if new evidence arises then modify the theory accordingly.

Religion is diametrically opposed to this approach. Religion is faith based and having faith basically means believing what you are told without any evidence.

I've always enjoyed reading Greek, Roman and Norse myths. But to ancient peoples these weren't myths: they were living, breathing religions that permeated every aspect of every day life. The only difference between ancient and modern myths/religions are whether the believers are still alive.

I'm "open to learning" about what people believe, but not open to considering it anything other than a load of nonsense.

Vitalogy · 25/11/2017 19:49

but not open to considering it anything other than a load of nonsense. Nonsense because you don't know it. If you used yourself as the measure instead of scientific instruments and measures then it's possible to know it.

ElephantAndBird · 25/11/2017 19:57

People aren't ignorant just because they dare to disagree with you OP. Hth.
