Period / sanitary products - poss TMI

Wondering if I'm the only person to have this issue so mainly posting for traffic!

I have endometriosis and therefore very long and heavy periods. I can't use anything internal as it's too painful, far too messy and heavy, and I worry about the possibility of retrograde menstruation since they're so heavy.

The problem is that within a couple of days of my period starting, it feels like all the skin has been removed from my undercarriage. Because it's so heavy, no sanitary product absorbs quickly enough and I end up with serious chafing.

I bought some of those Always foam filled ones which were better (and less rough surface so less nasty rubbing) but even those now are causing bad chafing - only four days in and feels like I've had acid poured all over me.

Is this normal? What do other people do? Have tried fabric ones but they were even worse as the surface stays wet and that causes more chafing.

Off to raid my stash of nappy rash cream I reckon, but would love any suggestions. I'm wondering if it's like joggers nipples, where they become super sensitive to chafing.

Am I alone and weird or is this just another joyous thing we are expected to put up with?

If it makes you feel better, I had a hysterectomy eleven years ago. (My twins were 1 and they have a sister two years older). I've never looked back. Recovery was fast - similar to recovery from a c-section if you've had one of them. I can honestly say that I have never, ever regretted it.

looks like you are getting irritation from disposable pads. Happened to me too. Switch your menstrual product.

redflo · 29/11/2017 15:35

I have just recently switched fully to reusable. I am an external person so used pad a lot but i used get irritation and chaffing. Then i switched to reusable, super soft but still found it uncomfortable. But recently I volunteered to try out period underwear which has inbuilt absorption layer in the under wear and you can use it wash, dry and use it again. Honestly they are the most comfy period product I have ever used.
But as I said i used external. The best thing about is you don't have to wear any menstrual product even on my heavy days and i can wear it all night too. check them out wuka or something like that.

I know sponge are eco friendly, but do you recommend?

Not read all the replies but I recently tried Lillets pads and they are great. The maxi pads are thick but are super comfy and have wings. Try the night time ones. No horrible smell or weird too sheet mesh either.

I have like really weird scars and stretch marks where the sides of towels used to rub me and hurt me they were like sores.

I have very heavy periods so I wear the tenna lady pants. It doesn't rub and no leaks.

Endo sufferer here - have you tried pro-stap? I've tried numerous treatments over the years and this was the only one that really made a difference.

Sorry don't mean to be ignorant because I know what heavy periods and pain are like. Have you considered a Mirena coil? Best decision I ever made.

I have this problem too OP. I can't use tampons for the first few days as my flow is very heavy so have to rely on towels. Like you I react badly to towels, to the point where you can see the actual outline of irritation where it's been touching my skin. I've sacked off normal always (along with many others, I've tried them all bar lilets pads) and now only use the foam ones, better absorption but still a bit irritating to my skin.
I use dermol cream as a barrier/soother/repairer which i'm prescribed for eczema elsewhere on my body and it helps a bit.
Got nothing helpful to add really but good luck I hope you find a solution soon.

Would tramexanic acid help at all to reduce flow?
I had super heavy periods and last year I opted for ablation. It’s made a MASSIVE difference. I still bleed but instead of filling a mooncup every 90 mins for 5 days I only have to change it every 6 hours.

Has your gynae surgeon mentioned ablation at all?
