Having seen the pictures of manic grabbing of consumer goods - and the amount of people able to spare the time to do it, AIBU to think that we have a strange notion in this country of Austerity and poverty.
Answers on a postcard please ............

There's some (self) delusion and denial going on.

Ttbb · 24/11/2017 10:54

The state provides free healthcare/education/insurance in the form of a safety net to everyone, even billionaires if they want it. If this is austerity then I would like to see what 'normal' government spending looks like Hmm

coddiwomple · 24/11/2017 10:54

It's hardly new. In some countries, being poor is being unable to feed your kids, and access to healthcare or education is simply unthinkable. In others, it's being poorER than others.

That said, people splashing money they might or not have doesn't mean that it's reflective of the entire country either.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/11/2017 10:59

Don't be ridiculous, Ttbb. Of course there's austerity. Look into a library, hospital, school, council office etc. Look at the further cuts in the latest budget.

Do you think maybe its the people NOT in poverty that are buying expensive things?

HmmGF.

ZaraW · 24/11/2017 11:00

So many people are in debt and just sticking it on your credit card has become the norm. Plus the desire for stuff at "bargain" prices.

purits · 24/11/2017 11:05

We need social provision to be for everyone. If the rich people buy their provision and the poor people are forced to accept whatever the Government supplies then we will soon be in a position of 'naice' versus 'bare minimum'. It is in the interest of everyone for provision to be universal.

Read the economic data around this trainwreck of a budget.

Economic growth at the bottom of the chart.
Wage growth stagnant.
The UK has fallen out of the top 5 economies.

Thanks a lot Tories.

pigeondujour · 24/11/2017 11:52

The thing is is that there are a lot of people in the U.K. and they don't all live in the same house.

KathArtic · 24/11/2017 11:55

Thanks a lot Tories....

for getting us out of the mess left by the last Labour Gvt

Eh...so just because lots of people can afford to spend money this means what? That there's no poverty? Dont be ridiculous. Lots of people are in poverty in the UK. Just like lots of people have lots of money. And lots of people are in between somewhere.

squoosh · 24/11/2017 11:56

Getting us out of a mess? Talk about uninformed!

QuiteIrregular · 24/11/2017 14:16

But ‘austerity’ doesn’t mean poverty, as far as I understand it - it refers to a set of policies implemented by the government. You could have ‘austerity’ alongside any set of consumer conditions.

SloeSloeQuickQuickGin · 24/11/2017 14:28

Thanks a lot Tories....

Keep doing the good job digging us out of Dear Prudence, Gordon Browns fiscal shocker

VladmirsPoutine · 24/11/2017 14:30

This is a straw man argument, a fallacy. Austerity and Black Friday are not linked in the slightest. Confused

Ellisandra · 24/11/2017 14:34

Uh? Hmm

You know that you actually could link them. In a situation where people have less money, perhaps they're more likely to go crazy because they (think) they're getting great deals, and frankly they feel the need for the blow out?

But mostly - uh? Hmm you do get that not everyone has the same disposable income, right?

Floellabumbags · 24/11/2017 14:39

*they don't all live in the same house,

We will be soon. The bloody workhouse.

upperlimit · 24/11/2017 14:39
Confused Hmm

I'm embarrassed on your behalf.

Floellabumbags · 24/11/2017 14:39

Austerity bold fail, not enough * to go around.

VladmirsPoutine · 24/11/2017 15:23

But mostly - uh? hmm you do get that not everyone has the same disposable income, right?

Of course people have varying degrees of income. I'm pretty sure that the CEO at my company earns considerably more than the people that work in our canteen. What a ridiculous supposition.

Austerity, and essentially belt-tightening concerned cuts in public spending. That is entirely separate from an Asos 40% off deal, or 60% off a 42-inch flat-screen.

Once we start to consider and accept that the state controls the autonomy of its citizens we enter into an entirely different realm. I will happily purchase a 2 for 1 deal or something on offer. I spend within my means. I think greater steps need to be taken for people to get to grips with money-management.

But if the question is: Do I consider an American important commercial idea equivalent to DLA being cut??? Nope. Not even in the same league.

VladmirsPoutine · 24/11/2017 15:38

Whilst we're discussing it, where are the Black Friday deals on energy supply, fuel, tuition fees, private renting, housing? Is 50% off Boden's Winter range going to send your average family into some kind of spending spree frenzy? I think not.

x2boys · 24/11/2017 16:19

Are you assuming that people can only spare time to manually grab goods because they are not working and there for benefits ?Hmm Have you considered that not everyone works 9-5?

expatinscotland · 24/11/2017 16:24

Yeah, they've done a great job getting us out of mess! Did you actually watch the budget yesterday? LOL!

x2boys · 24/11/2017 16:26

On benefits*
