Christmas Jumpers

Has this been done before?

I don't get it. I'm all for fun and I don't mind doing a bit for charity, but people all over the country are spending a minimum of £13 (?) on a jumper and often a lot more. Wear it once and give £1 to charity.

So it costs £££ in the name of giving £1 to charity, not to mention the waste of all these (nasty acrylic Grin ) jumpers being produced and barely worn.

Am I missing something?

I teach Reception and wear Christmas jumpers and dresses every day during December. I may or may not have bought a bun ring with a red nose and antlers to make my hair look like Rudolph, too, for the princely sum of £2.99 from H&M. Because if you can't be ridiculous in December when can you?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/11/2017 19:16

You wear them more than once. I don't know anyone who throws one out after one wearing.

TeenTimesTwo · 23/11/2017 19:18
  1. buy large for children so you get at least 2 years' wear out of each jumper for each child.
  2. pass down jumpers to younger siblings
  3. buy from charity shops. Sorted.

Our Xmas sweaters are from firstly Lidl so six quid and on year 2, and secondly new from a charity shop year 4 and a fiver. Both get a lot of wear (principally at nursery) through out the year.

Yabu!

I have a Christmas jumper, Christmas t shirt and Christmas woolly leggings. All get worn throughout December and then put away for the next year. They are all from Tesco so not what I would call expensive and for the number of years I have been wearing them it probably works out around a £3 per year.

Have 4 boys who have had Christmas jumper day at school! Now only 2 are in primary so they are the only ones doing Christmas jumper day now.

2 years ago we couldn't find a nice, reasonably priced jumper for DS3, then 8 years old, in the time we had, so he wore a Christmas Rex (T-rex in a santa hat) t-shirt with a zip up hoody on top so his classmates could see he was taking part, t-shirt was cheaper than a jumper and worn numerous times. DS4 now wears it too. That year DS4, then 5 years old, had a Christmas penguin jumper that was a bit big, so that did for last year too!

Last year we asked DS3 if he would like a set of Christmas pyjamas and he could wear the (long sleeved) top over a t-shirt for warmth on Christmas jumper day. He jumped at the idea when we saw a set with Christmas pugs on (they are mad for pugs). He wore those pyjamas until a couple of weeks ago, when he'd worn out the elbows and we replaced them with a new set for him and DS4, both will be wearing the top for school on December 15th this year. New pjs and a Christmas jumper in one!

Youngest are twins and are 3 years younger than DD1 so it will be another year at least before they fit the one that DD1 had last year - it would drown them! (and would obviously only do one of them) DS is 3 years older than DD1 and super tall with very long arms so it's likely to be another two or three years before his latest one fits her!

Lots of kids have Christmas jumpers and tshirts they wear from November up to and after Christmas, so it isn't just for one day. My dcs have never really wanted Christmassy clothes, so on the Save The Children day they had a Christmassy thing tacked onto a cardigan or jumper they already had, and maybe a Christmas hair bobble.

RaininSummer · 23/11/2017 19:59

I can't stand them as they seem to be cheap acrylic which I hate. I won't be buying one despite the work decree that we wear one for our dinner. Now if I could find and afford a gorgeous cashmere or merino one I might be persuaded.

barefoofdoctor · 23/11/2017 20:11

I was against Christmas jumpers until I discovered good old M&S do cashmere ones and Laura Ashley wool/natural fibres.

StatueInTheSky · 23/11/2017 20:14

Well, I bought an Elf dress! I cannot wait to put it on!

KatherinaMinola · 23/11/2017 20:19

Christmas jumpers are like Christmas decorations - they come out every year on the first then put away when the children go back to school.

Yes, this. They are very practical, especially if you are outdoors a lot or can't afford to put the heating on all day. Look festive, stay warm - win/win!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 23/11/2017 20:26

I don't like them myself but a good quality winter themed one could be reworn lots through out winter! I DIY'd the nearest thing I have to one. Already owned white fur gloves and a plain red jumper. Pop A on to B and I become Mrs Claus Grin

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 23/11/2017 20:27

*glove cuffs even!

ForalltheSaints · 23/11/2017 20:29

Not for me but no objections to others wearing them.

MuddlingThroughLife · 23/11/2017 20:32

I think I now own 9 christmas jumpers, 2 christmas dresses, 4 christmas teeshirts, 1 fleecy elf hoodie, 3 pairs of christmas pj's, 1 fleecy christmas onsie and numerous pairs of christmas socks. They come out on 1st December and get worn every day. Even to work.

rcit · 23/11/2017 20:33

You either:

Buy massive (dd has one still going strong from 4 years ago)

And/Or

Buy a reasonable quality jumper that can be worn as a normal jumper throughout winter but fits Christmas jumper themes

And

Hand jumpers down to siblings and friends.

You do not buy some light up shit that cannot be washed. Or a horrible gaudy design/fabric that can only be worn once and binned. Or something covered in bits that fall off. TBH none of these should be produce. Disgustingly bad for the environment.

Bigkingdom · 23/11/2017 21:10

I buy them for my kids as they have Christmas jumper day at school, they then wear them Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

I would never wear one though. Totally not my style lol
