To think that if you have to ask how to pronounce a name, you should not use it for your baby?

Just that really.

Nobody could pronounce my maiden name. I have an unusual forename too which, although the pronunciation seems obvious, people mistake it for a different but similar name.

As an introverted child, I used to cringe when my name was incorrectly called out by teachers, doctors etc.

Why would you knowingly inflict that upon your child?

A-A-ron anybody?

user1468353179 · 21/11/2017 23:01

My name is Marie Therese, How do you pronouce it?. xxx

Mac12345 · 21/11/2017 23:01

My maiden name is Scottish and always pronounced and written wrong. I was forever spelling it out. Then a film came out using the wrong spelling in it's title and I gave up all hope.

Now I'm married to someone who isn't British and I'm still forever spelling out my surname!

One of my boys has a traditional name from my husband's country, it's not hard to say but it has a J that is pronounced Y so often said wrong. I wonder if he'll default to the English equivalent when he's older.

nakedscientist · 21/11/2017 23:02

I have an unusual (in England) Irish name and we gave our kids unusual Irish names (easy surname though) we get Christmas cards to "the unspellables! Kids love their names, they have stories and culture that go with them that remind them of their roots.

what is a reverse name?

Nyx1 · 21/11/2017 23:08

I think Ive interpreted the OP post differently than everyone else

I thought OP was saying, if the parents aren't familiar with the name and had to check how to say it, they shouldn't use it?

So not that they know it's a nuisance name but they literally didn't know it themselves?

I have a nuisance name as well, I really sympathise. I'd rather be called Sarah or
Jane or anything that's not wide open to lots of questions and that has many spelling variations.

rackhampearl · 21/11/2017 23:09

My
DD name is Gia pronounced like Gina without the N but people always get it wrong and pronounce it like karate Gi’ a ... like G for gum. It just makes her laugh and she corrects them but it may irritate her when she’s older and she might blame me. 😏

TatianaLarina · 21/11/2017 23:12

I know 2 Eleanors and 1 Elinor and they’re all pronounced as in E Rigby.

Eleanoooor sounds a bit like Eeyore.

nakedscientist · 21/11/2017 23:12

Escapeas does that say "Ornia"? Is it supposed to be Aine?

I once met an Enid who pronounced it En-id rather than eeenid.

I do agree with the pp who was saying that what the op means is why would someone post here saying ‘I love the name Xxy but I don’t know how to pronounce it’. How can you love a name if you don’t know how to say it?

roomsonfire · 21/11/2017 23:27

I knew a kadifae once. Good luck trying to work that out.

UnRavellingFast · 21/11/2017 23:28

I have a name that everyone assumes is the normal (overseas name) version but my parents gave it to me with different pronunciation. Pain in the arse, hth for parents naming their babies something "lovely and unusual"!

RosaDeZoett · 21/11/2017 23:29

Might we be related in RL..... Smile?

Nyx1 · 21/11/2017 23:33

Because of my experiences, I know Marry Trays is a joke but a little bit of me thinks it might not be....

Ethylred · 21/11/2017 23:42

If everyone had the same name these problems wouldn't arise.

Right, now I'm off to sort out world peace, Brexit and global warming.

BackforGood · 21/11/2017 23:43

I once met an Enid who pronounced it En-id rather than eeenid

I grew up (obviously) reading Enid (Eeeee-nid) Blyton. I also grew up with a great Aunt called Enid (En-id). I was well into adulthood before I realised it was the same name. Grin

To go back to the original question - I presume that people are not asking how to proni=ounce the name, but are trying to get a feel for what % of other people would pronounce their chosen name in their eyes wrongly.

deadringer · 21/11/2017 23:46

HolyShomly it's Cadhla, pronounced ky-la. It means beautiful. It's unusual but I have heard one or two in the last couple of years.

pastabakewithcheese · 21/11/2017 23:51

Ooh I want to know what these names are now!!

Originalfoogirl · 21/11/2017 23:53

I have a normal name with an unusual spelling. Unless I meet Australians, they always spell it correctly. I’m not too fussed by randoms but I do get really annoyed when I email someone and my email address, sign off then office signature have my name in it but people still get it wrong.

Then, when people forget my name, they call me Claire. Every single time. Everyone does it and my name is nothing like Claire. It’s really confusing.

We have inadvertently done the same to our daughter. Her name is not particularly unusual, but apparently it isn’t often spelled how we spell it.

And, I know many Eleanors. They all pronounce it eh-le-nor.

HarveySherlock · 22/11/2017 00:36

My name isn't a name it's a collection of letters that when pronounced sounds very different. Pick any 3 consonants and 5 vowels, that's my name pronounced Ava. There is no letter A in my name. I wish I had an unusual name or at least one that my parents actively didn't make up. Hmm

FlyMaybe · 22/11/2017 01:25

Yes just to clarify, I meant that I don’t understand why you would ‘choose’ a name that you’re not even sure how to pronounce for your child.

Neither of my own names is English, and I’m all for diversity btw.

Like other posters, even if I spell my forename out to people, they still Misspell / mispronounce it back to me.

Don’t get me started on Yoo-Neek spellings Grin
