To think that a wasp sting should not be itchy again 3 months later?

I got stung by a wasp in August. It hurt a lot. Swelled up a little bit (but not much) and was phenomenally itchy for about 10 days. Then it went away.

Yesterday, the site of the wasp sting started itching again. Its' really really itchy and getting more so by the hour. WTF?

So as not to drip feed, the only thing I can think of is that I've had a nasty virus thing for the past three days (sore throat type thing). But I have no idea why that would make an old wasp sting itch.

It, along with my raging sore throat, is beginning to drive me insane.

It can happen - I remember getting stung behind the ear and had an itchy lump for absolutely months - drove me bloody mad!

Wasps can sting more than once, so they can have bacteria on the sting, and it can flare up. It can happen with other insect bites as well.
If its no better tomorrow ring your GP and ask to speak to the practice nurse.

Maybe there was a protein in the wasp sting fluid that happens to have a similar amino acid sequence to the virus you have, so your immune system is reacting to both. There could have been some left in a cyst at the site of the sting which has now been released.

Once I had a wasp get stuck in my arm. The sting blistered and burst in a very unpleasant manner and was irritated for a long time afterwards. Can still see the scar more than 10 years later.

Old scars do flare up and get itchy, new scars even more so.

Argh - it woke me up in the night with its infernal itching. F**king wasp.

Thanks for all the rational explanations.

Nothing really to add but just wondering, have you taken an antihistamine for the itching?

Closetlibrarian · 21/11/2017 13:25

I took one this morning Maggie and the itching has subsided a bit. Still really red though. Maybe there are alien eggs in there waiting to hatch?

I was stung by a wasp in the summer too, and my god it was SO itchy, for months! I did get a little worried and considered going to see a nurse, but by the time I got around to calling it was easing off again.

I had a horse fly bite that used to come up and down for ages, itched like a bastard.

I got stung by a wasp (possibly a mud dauber) in July and it HURT. The next day my entire leg had swelled up two times it’s normal size. Went to the ER and was given antibiotics to prevent infection and some anti-itching meds. My leg was hot and itches so bad. After about a month the swelling was gone and all I had left was a round red dot from where it stung me. It’s now the end of September and the itching has flared back up. It’s super frustrating and annoying.

pharmacist, cortiso-steroid something like that name cream. Sorted mine out.

I had a sting that itched and took 6 months to heal, my body was obviously sensitised and the next time I was stung 3 years later I went into anaphylactic shock

Ant venom is related to wasp venom so take care if you ever have an ant bite too

PelasioMum · 21/03/2024 03:33

Mine happened as a 3 year old. I’m 47 now and the site where I was stung has a small scar/lump that flares up and gets itchy from time to time

See your GP. It is likely that there is a tiny bit of the sting left under your skin and it is causing the irritation.
I had something similar and my GP just anesthetized the area and cut the offending bit out. Totally painless and only took a couple of minutes.
