Evening all. I;m along time member but have name changed as this is quite personal.
I'm 43, and my periods have been changing for a while. I've always been pretty crap at tracking my cycle, but it was around 25-26 days long. Over the last year or so my periods have shortened to a couple of heavy days, then very light for a few more days before the end. I assumed that I was coming perimenopausal (my mum was 49 when she went through it so young-ish).
September - came on around the 13th
October - about the 13-14th (so 31 days later)
November - 4th or 5th, so 20-21 days later.
I came on again yesterday, and herein lies the problem. I googled "period coming early" (why?!) and on the back of that have made an apt to see my GP and for a smear (which I'm very ashamed to say is about a year overdue). Info I've read seems to suggest being perimenopausal would mean longer gaps, or missing them. Shorter gaps is not good and warrants a GP trip.
So now I'm bloody terrified that something is wrong with me. I can't see my Doc for 10 days (earliest apt) and can't have a smear till the weekend after as I'm on right now and that's the earliest they'll book me in. I could ask for an emergency GP apt I suppose, but as i can't have the smear earlier I'm not sure how that would help. Although I am an anxious person, I'm not usually overly worried about my health. But now I am, help!

Well you've done the right thing booking a smear...but I think it's just an "our age" thing. (I'm 42). I few years ago a day in on a conversation with a group of women a few years older than I was then and it's was all about irregular periods, excessive bleeding, weight gain etc..

I really wouldn't worry. Short cycles are usually due to not ovulating, or short luteul phases due to poor fertility. All common with peri menopause.

Since losing my twins in 2013 I sometimes have a 31 day cycle like I always did but frequently have 2 periods in a month (so a 12-15 day cycle) was referred to gynae who found nothing wrong and after dd2 was born in 2015 this has continued, it seems to just be one of the many ways my body shows its dislike of me Confused
So while you absolutely did the right thing to get booked in it's hopefully all ok Flowers

Thanks all, and thewhyterose I'm really sorry to hear about your twins. I was ok until I did some internet searching, but yes at least I've got the smear booked in. Fingers crossed it's just the start of some crappy but normal changes as I get older :(

My cycles have carried a great deal over the years. I'm sure it's nothing but at least it's promoted you to get your smear done.
