To be scared to go to the doctors?

worriedaboutchristmas · 20/11/2017 12:07

I’m not well. At all- for the last week or two I’ve been exhausted- overwhelmingly so. Im sleeping up to 15 hours a day. Falling asleep in work. I’ve stopped driving. I’m not able to stay awake sometimes.

I’m not depressed. There is something physically causing this. But I am scared to go to the doctors. I think I have diabetes. I’m overweight. I drink too much, eat too much and do virtually no exercise. The tiredness is worse after eating.

But it’s about to be Christmas. And I feel like if I’m diagnosed with diabetes and have to then act upon that- it will ruin Christmas a bit. No alcohol or Christmas chocs. Not being able to go out for a Christmas meal. So would aibu to just carry on until after the festive period?

I believe you can be tested for Diabetes, in Lloyds Chemist, which is inside larger Sainsbury stores.

AgathaF · 20/11/2017 12:50

Phone them, ask for an appointment.

GaryWilmotsTeeth · 20/11/2017 12:51

I recently had a breast scare. I was doing my best to ignore it for a while but I kept telling myself that whether or not I went and got seen, I would still have whatever it was that I had. getting a diagnosis wasn't actually going to change anything. thankfully all is ok.
whatever the medical issue is, its probably no worse than what you are already imagining anyway.
so, first step is deep breath and make the appointment.
second step is go to the appointment.
third step is find out what you're dealing with.
fourth step is deal with it.
break it down into smaller steps and it will feel less overwhelming.

Papergirl1968 · 20/11/2017 12:52

Sounds more like a virus to me, to come in that quickly, but just to say if it is diabetes, take the advice from the dietitians re cutting out sweet things.
My dad didn’t and had to have his legs amputated as a result. It also indirectly led to his death soon after.
I was pre diabetic, lost a few lbs, and wasn’t pre diabetic any more, but have since put it on again and moved back to pre diabetic so I need to practice what I preach.

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2017 12:52

Call GP. TODAY.
Diabetes can kill you. It may well not be that but if there's any doubt you call. Today.

GrumpyOldBag · 20/11/2017 12:53

I would get your thyroid checked.

If that's what's causing the issue, you will feel better almost as soon as you start being treated. then you can enjoy xmas.

GrumpyOldBag · 20/11/2017 12:55

Just phone your GP surgery.

Ask for the first available non-emergency appointment. It probably won't be for at least a couple of weeks anyway.

VulgarWheat · 20/11/2017 12:59

I'm going to echo what pps have said.
Dying of complications of diabetes is going to fuck your Christmas far more than avoiding sugar.

Had to do it with gestational diabetes, if you start now the sugar cravings will be gone by then.

RagingFemininist · 20/11/2017 13:00

P,ease do to see the GP ASAP.

IF this is diabetes, it’s likely that you will have had it for a while befire yur noticed those symptoms. At diabetes is a real bigger as to what it does to your body.
But just as well, it could be a lot of other things.
And only your GP could tell you that (and take blood tests etc...)

As for Christmas, do you think you are going to enjoy it if you are still sleeping 15+ hours a day? If you fall asleep so much you can’t drive? If you need a nap after a small meal (how are you coping to cope with abig Christmas meal?).

Yes u see, if it was me, I wouod want to go now so that I could be on the mend for Christmas instead of feeling so rubbish.

goose1964 · 20/11/2017 13:01

I'm diabetic, it won't ruin Christmas , as far as drinking goes dry wine, spirits with diet mixers are OK. I eat the odd mince pie, there's very little in a roast that you can't eat, just hold off the cranberry sauce, or make your own replacing sugar with Stevia, bread sauce , a small slice of pudding would probably be Ok (I'll be having a very small slice).

It's not great fun being diabetic but it's not the end of the world either.Im a lot healthier than I used to be

EmilyChambers79 · 20/11/2017 13:16

Look, I have to go and get a breast lump checked today. And I really don't want to. But I have to and so do you

I hope it goes ok for you.

mumof06darlings · 20/11/2017 13:20

I was you and it was thyroid issues. 1 tablet a day and I'm much improved. If you go now then you will hopefully be on the right road for Christmas

brasty · 20/11/2017 13:51

Yes sounds much more like thyroid than diabetes. And you may naturally lose weight as well once you start taking the tablets.

worriedaboutchristmas · 20/11/2017 14:04

I’d thought thyroid but I have other symptoms of diabetes too- thirst and thrush namely. I’m going to go tomorrow - my surgery don’t do non emergency appointments , you have to phone and go on the dayHmm

Thanks for the proverbial kick up the bum. I knew aibu but had convinced myself that as I have December off work and with or without a diagnosis I’ll still have whatever I have, then it could wait.

DesignedForLife · 20/11/2017 14:07

Call your GP. Reception can advise if a nurse can deal with it. If it is diabeties and you ignore it you could end up in hospital which wouldn't be the best for Christmas.

It could be you're a bit anemic. Go get checked.

KimmySchmidt1 · 20/11/2017 14:12

How much do really need to be fat? What would you sacrifice in order to stay as fat as you can? Job? Car? Do like being fat more than you like staying alive? Seriously?

Wouldn't it be quite good to have a really good reason to lose weight and feel amazing slipping into a size 10 or 12 dress? I say this because I lost 5 stone a few years ago and it felt fantastic.

Thinking about it that way might give you the courage to go to the doctors.

Sienna333 · 20/11/2017 14:16

I do know how you feel as have a bowel issue which is still causing me issues. Stool test came back clear but I am still not right.
Please don't assume the worst, it could be something simple and all this worry could be for nothing. Worrying about what it could be has got to be worse than finding out for sure what is going on x

brasty · 20/11/2017 14:20

Kimmy For lots of people it is not motivation enough. Because motivation is not the issue.

Giraffey1 · 20/11/2017 14:27

Please go and see your GP. None of us can diagnose you and nor can Doctor Google. But your GP is there to help us as patients work out what is going on and where possible, put things right.
And you know what, no, it's not great having diabetes (I'm in the pre stage like some other posters here, it's a condition that runs in our family and I'm overweight, too) but my mum had diabetes II having been diagnoes decades ago, and is 92. It doesn't have to spoli your life!

Jappydooda · 20/11/2017 14:28

Go!

I felt like that at the beginning of the year. Got a blood test that revealed I was extremely low on iron and vitamin D. In fact, I was lucky not to have needed a blood transfusion for the iron.

8 months on and having been on iron and vitamin D tablets - I am SO much better!!!

Go!!

Feilin · 20/11/2017 14:31

My dh is like this with sleep apnoea . Cpap machine helps. Wonder if its this rather than diabetes? Either way get yourself to the dr right now before the whole of mumsnet descends on you for not looking after yourself. Chin up. You count you matter so please start helping yourself.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/11/2017 14:35

"I’d thought thyroid but I have other symptoms of diabetes too- thirst and thrush namely."

Those are classic symptoms. When you ring for an appointment don't be fobbed off. If necessary tell the receptionist that you need to be tested for diabetes asap.

My friend's husband suspected diabetes and as soon as the blood test results came through he was admitted to hospital immediately so that they could regulate his blood sugar.

Good luck.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2017 14:37

Go to the doctors. Your life and health is worth so much more than wine and chocolate.

I had to give up alcohol and chocolate, amongst other things, because they cause me migraines. I ate a tiny bit of chocolate the other day and it tasted horrible. I don't miss it at all and I used to eat loads of it.

Good luck 💐

Serin · 20/11/2017 14:41

If you are seriously stressing because you might not be able to have a drink over Christmas, and are prepared to risk your health over this, then you should also have a serious review of your alcohol intake.

Topseyt · 20/11/2017 14:52

I am recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Very early stages, and taking as many steps as possible to control it now.

I've been working on changing my eating habits and losing weight for some time now, and have been making progress (albeit quite slow). I like to eat and drink pretty sensibly now anyway and these days hardly ever touch crisps, chocolate or biscuits. I find they make me feel sluggish if I do now, so they are rare. It certainly won't ruin Christmas.

Glad you are now going to go to your GP. Whatever it either is or even hopefully isn't, the sooner you know then the sooner you can take steps to tackle it.
