Help - painful throat?

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 19/11/2017 19:25

Had my tonsils out as an adult 14 years ago, so it's not that!

My throat is very very sore on one side. It looks white but inflamed on that side of the back of the throat and where the tonsils used to be, IYSWIM. It's not closing up.

Swallowing is very painful, and I'm struggling with it, just like I used to when my throat basically closed up. Sleep is a nightmare, I'm waking up every few minutes choking and struggling to swallow. I feel like someone has beaten me head to toe with a cricket bat.

I'm presenting a case in court tomorrow (ha!) and have to drive 3hours each way to get there, so calling in sick is not an option

I have the usual battery of OTC meds in the house and a shit load of alcohol but nothing specifically for throats. No 24hr pharmacy options in rural Cornwall.

What can I do to get some bloody sleep tonight?! Save me!

Well that's me wide awake with the pain again. Taken paracetamol, just waiting for it to kick in.

I have a bad feeling I'm not travelling in the morning. Fuck.

Anyway, it's forgotten about aspirin and ibuprofen, so won't do that again!
I suspect it's a call to the GP in the morning.

Put loads of aspirin in a cup with water and gargle every 2 hours ...

Do NOT swallow it. This helped me big time when I suffered

Oh it hurts! Just waiting for the docs to open so I can ring them. Of all the bloody days....

How did you get on at the docs Vivienne? Hope you're feeling a bit better Flowers

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 20/11/2017 15:25

Hiya, thanks for the flowers. They said it seems to be viral with no evidence of gross bacterial infection. Self medicate and go back to bed. So obviously, I've been unable to sleep all day and am shattered!

Will dose up with codeine to sleep tonight and see how it goes. DH is picking me up a difflam spray and the strefen lozenges, he'll be home later.

Not so feverish, still very achy. I think it's secondary tonsillitis like a PP suggested, just the viral version.

Tonsils can grow back sometimes :(

Get your DH to get some ice cream or something as well, and have some really cold drinks ready - that always soothes my throat when it's playing up. Hope you feel better!

Rhodiolia · 20/11/2017 15:44

I have the exact same thing and had the exact same advice from the Dr this morning. I feel like I have eaten razor blades! Difflam spray not really helping :(

MichaelFabricantsHair · 20/11/2017 16:05

Hope the codeine helps, it's been my saviour this past few days! Hope you perk up soon and manage to get some sleep tonight.

I have also developed a sore throat during the day - going to buy some lemons and honey on the way home as my go-to sore throat remedy is a spoon of honey, juice of one lemon and half a pint of boiled water (cooled down a bit so you can drink it). Apparently the honey soothes the throat and has an antiobiotic function (??) whilst the lemon juice breaks down any mucus thats formed. I imagine in a similar way to Lemsip but they make me throw up so home made version it is.

Hope you feel better soon OP and everyone else with sore throats. Flowers
