to ask how much your kitchen cost?

We are in the process of arranging quotes for our kitchen but I have no idea on what is a reasonable price to expect to pay?

My kitchen is 7ft 11" by 11ft and the kitchen is a "U " shape. Does it work out better to have one person do it all or buy the kitchen and have a contractor fit it?

You will get widely varying answers!
Ours was about £30K - one local independent kitchen contractor. Did the whole lot including appliances, floor etc. as part of a big extension we did. Size about 18' x 14'.

19lottie82 · 19/11/2017 13:50

I don’t think there is a reasonable price, it depends what you want to spend.
My kitchen sounds around the same shape as yours and it cost £11k recently.
It would have been easy to spend a lot more but you could have likewise done it for a lot less if you weren’t too fussed about certain things and sourced all the cabinets online etc.

19lottie82 · 19/11/2017 13:50

PS usually cheaper to buy kitchen yourself and get a contractor to fit it.

Moanyoldcow · 19/11/2017 13:52

Ours is a bit bigger than yours - cost £10k including Smeg range cooker but not other appliances.

Bought the kitchen from diy-kitchens.co.uk (Fantastic service and price) and got our trusted builder to fit it.

m011y · 19/11/2017 13:54

If you know a skilled kitchen fitter that you trust get them to fit it, and choose where you buy it from. If you don’t know a fitter try to get it all done by the same company- if you use different people and something goes wrong they blame each other and you are stuck in the middle. Also pay part of the kitchen with a credit card as then you are protected legally if something goes wrong. As for how much you pay....it’s a much or little as you want. Don’t use wren!

BringMeCoffee · 19/11/2017 14:35

Ooh I had done an online booking for Wren - what's wrong with them? I do know people in the trade but they have full time jobs too so I am thinking I may be best getting it all done by one as they would only have weekends and possibly evenings that they could do! I suppose I will just have to get a few quotes in but just feel so overwhelmed with it all!

Ours was done last year. Quotes ranged from £6k to £20k. It cost about £15k in the end (excluding appliances). I agree about getting one company to do the whole thing. That way they're in charge of getting everyone to do whatever they do, when they should be doing it!

Turquoisetamborine · 19/11/2017 15:05

Ours was 5k fully fitted. It’s a large kitchen and was part of a new extension. It’s a Second Nature one. My dad knew the owner of the firm so I suspect that was a really good price. My washer leaked when it was a few months old so the owner replaced a few wrecked units for free.
I’ve heard Howdens are good too.

Turquoisetamborine · 19/11/2017 15:05

Excluding appliances that was.

limon · 19/11/2017 15:08

Ours is big and cost less thank £3k as we bought everything when local b&q shut down and dh fitted it.

Blodplod · 19/11/2017 15:10

Ours was £36k including granite worktops, all appliances etc. We bought from a small independent and ours was custom made. It was a one off and totally worth it though! Most quotes we were getting were in the £30k arena. To be fair it’s a large kitchen though.

greendale17 · 19/11/2017 15:13

Wren kitchens have an awful reputation. Look up the reviews and Watchdog

MrTrebus · 19/11/2017 15:15

Find the Facebook group about wren kitchens. Their cabinets keep falling off the wall, don't go There! Recommend Wickes or Howdens via trade. I don't rate b&q but they're massively popular. New homebase range looks good. Or go independent.

BrioAmio · 19/11/2017 15:18

Mine cost about £5k but we’re in the trade so, probably more like a £10k kitchen and it’s done on the cheap as we don’t plan to stay here forever!

chocolatepudandchocolatesauce · 19/11/2017 15:21

Ours was £3k from Ikea and DH fitted it. Wren have a very bad reputation for not forfilling orders and when they do parts are often broken or not correct so you have to keep waiting for more deliveries. Apparently everything comes straight from the factory, there is no storage, so it is all made to order and therefore if not correct or up to standard has to be remade, presumably at the back of the queue to all the new orders.

TemptressofWaikiki · 19/11/2017 15:37

Mine came to a grand in total, including most appliances, sink, tap etc for a pretty large space. But I built almost all of it myself. I used some IKEA carcasses, as it worked out cheaper than making them from scratch but build most to fit custom sizes and have fridge, cooker, dishwasher etc inbuilt. And I cut all the doors and drawer fronts and drilled or routed in holes for top end concealed hinges and drawer runners, so everything opens easily and smoothly. I also got the chance to have a one-off design by routing very rounded edges and spraying everything, so it looks like an original 1950s kitchen but with all latest up-to-date comforts. Getting long, seamless custom worktops for a fairly large kitchen would have cost me a fortune. So, I built shuttering and cast it with cement myself with a smooth polished terrazzo surface. The real advantage is that it is virtually indestructible and really easy to clean. Acquaintances raved about it and asked me to do theirs for them but where not prepared to pay me for my labour. I don’t do mate rates any longer.

Ridingthegravytrain · 19/11/2017 15:37

Kitchen is 5mx4m we bought howdens Tewkesbury framed (which i think is their most expensive) with curved edges and a large island

2xbosch ovens
1xneff gas hob
Granite worktops
Hand made utility room cupboards to house appliances and boiler
2xrads
Flooring

All in cost us £20k fitted

toolonglurking · 19/11/2017 21:06

It came free with the house Grin

dinodiva · 19/11/2017 21:29

About £25k for everything. We used a brand called Mereway - think they make the JL kitchens. It’s solid wood so we did go for an expensive option. Price includes everything - all new appliances (Samsung - via design company), granite surfaces, underfloor heating, tiles, fitting. I bloody love it.

RedRosie · 19/11/2017 21:41

Ours was about £14k (incl all appliances, fitting, flooring and decoration/tiling/making good). Not high-end or anything though (Benchmarx kitchen, local fitter), Central London. We did have other work done at the same time - so there was an element of economies of scale.

BakedBeans47 · 19/11/2017 22:07

Ours was around £12k all in including getting part of wall knocked down, plastering, flooring, and new hob, hood, oven and fridge freezer. We went to an independent kitchen place who organised it all except the flooring which we sorted separately.

NorthCoast · 20/11/2017 07:25

Howdens Burford Tongue & Groove here. Four wall cabinets, one overhead plate rack, two drawer units, one corner unit, one sink unit, sink and tap, 2 x 3m worktop lengths and upstand, £2,500, plus about 4 days of my joiner's time at £20+VAT an hour (can't work it out exactly, as we gutted the whole house and he's been here a lot!). Hob, oven, extractor, washer/drier, dishwasher and fridge freezer from Curry's, just over £2,000.

Howdens' prices will depend on (a) how much of their discount your joiner passes on (mine gets 60-80% depending on the item, he simply tags the order with my name and I go in and pay them myself, so get the full whack) and (b) what time of year you're buying - they stock take at the end of October, so usually give an extra 10% discount if you buy and take delivery in October.

Lelloteddy · 20/11/2017 08:32

4K ( including all appliances) and a custom made floor to ceiling larder/dresser from a local independent place. That’s supplied and fitted and family members did the electrics and plumbing for free ( and ripped out the old kitchen) Another £200 for wall tiles and vinyl flooring.
