to ask how much you pay for home insurance?

When we bought our house a few years ago we arranged our buildings and contents insurance through the bank we were getting our mortgage from. DH is a lazy bugger was just going to accept the renewal quote that came through today (£580) is until I questioned it.

Anyway, I’ve done an online quote and it came up at £210. The massive difference has me worried, either I’ve made a huge mistake with the quote ( although I was quite careful) or we’ve been getting massively overcharged! For reference we live in a small 3 bedroom detached house. AIBU to ask which one sounds right? This is our first home so I’ve nothing to compare it to.

You will receive a cheaper quote online as these tend to include new customer discounts etc. Insurance companies sneakily apply increases year after year so your existing company have probably tried their luck in sending you a quote such as the one you have described. Buying insurance through the mortgage company is always a bad idea as it is sold through a broker usually, and again, this will have incurred extra fees. Just check the terms are like for like, or, if they're not, that you're happy with the terms of the new quote. I used to work for an insurance company (and I specialised in home insurance) and we used to take a lot of calls from customers whose subsequent quotes were significantly more expensive than their first year's price.
Saying that, if you live in a non-standard house, that could dramatically affect the price. I live in a listed home with a high rebuild cost and we have to get insurance specially written for us. (The rebuild cost is hundreds of thousands due to the price of the stone that would be needed). This costs us about £48 a month which I consider expensive, as I know how much it should cost for a more 'normal' home xx

I've just renewed ours for £136 building and contents, so £210 is a lot closer to the mark than £580, which is loads unless you live in a flood risk or high crime area, or have a big house or valuable contents.

It's dull but you have to shop around for insurance (plus broadband and gas and electric) or else you will pay a lot more than you have to.

FlashTheSloth · 18/11/2017 16:51

£98. Extended 3 bed semi that is nonstandard construction so probably costs a bit more. That is buildings and contents. I'd never pay more than £100 or thereabouts tbh.

Bluebiscuits · 18/11/2017 16:53

Around £300 for a 4 bedroom detached.

XiCi · 18/11/2017 16:58

£130 per annum for a 3 bed semi detached. Unless you live in a high crime area or in a listed building you have been massively ripped off paying over £500!

MrTrebus · 18/11/2017 17:02

You have to renew every insurance every year and this is why. Nothing wrong with your quote you've just been getting ripped off by accepting your renewal each year. We're currently with Zurich for b&c £230 for the year 3 bed terrace and only £50 excess for b&c. I work for a bank, we see this all the time usually older customers been using saga for years and then worry why our quote is sometimes £800 less!!! It's scary how much some people are getting ripped off. Same as car insurance.

TDHManchester · 18/11/2017 17:03

About £100 ,,buildings and contents, modernish two bed towny type terrace, thats with extra bits like legal etc..

MistyMinge · 18/11/2017 17:04

The price differs massively between companies.

There are lots of variables: claims history, flood area, crime stats for postcode, what excess you take, construction, whether you add accidental damage and so on.

However, for a 3 bed semi of standard construction, £580 sounds on the high side.

MrTrebus · 18/11/2017 17:05

It also depends on where you live obviously

WasDoingFine · 18/11/2017 17:08

Just renewed mine for buildings and contents £26.02/mth. 4 bed detached.

Eminybob · 18/11/2017 17:08

I’ve just done ours, it was something like £150, B & C, 3 bed semi.
I was with quickfit last year paying around the same, then our renewal and through at something like £900!!!
I think it was because they were stopping doing home insurance so were trying to get rid of it, but still! It was on auto renewal so imagine if I hadn’t got the letter or something!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 18/11/2017 17:10

Near the £200 mark, but I include legal cover and lots of extras. I swap regularly because you get the new customer discount. No benefits for loyalty!

ticketstub · 18/11/2017 17:11

Large 4 bed detached. Our recent renewal was also increased massively and last week I got the annual cost down from the £600 quoted to £230 with another company using a comparison website. The policies cover the same things, so new policy covers us as well, possibly better, than the old one. It was easy to switch, comparison website plus a call to new company took a total of 45 mins and ive saved nearly £400.

bigredboat · 18/11/2017 17:12

Renewal price for 3 bed terrace has. Come in at 120, I'm going to shop around for a slightly better deal, £580 seems loads although it does depend on a lot of factors.

TicketyBoo83 · 18/11/2017 17:15

It seems I was right in thinking DH has been getting ripped off big time! Thanks everyone, I’ll be shopping around on Monday!

Renewal quote from current insurance company, £564. New insurance company £236 + £40 cash back through Quidco = £196

Always check out the cash back websites I once found Prudential were offering £100 cash back. There was someone who had paid just £96 for their years insurance and got £100 back so they paid her £4 for her insurance for the year.

£210 sounds quite normal.

Afreshstartplease · 18/11/2017 17:18

5 bed end terrace

25 pcm

suckonthatmaureen · 18/11/2017 17:35

7 bed semi. £310.
Strangely enough our renewal quote was the cheapest!
