To think most houses aren't 'visitor ready'?

Got friends coming to stay this weekend. MIL just phoned to speak to DH, I explained he'd taken the kids out so that I can get the house sorted (change bedding, put the hoover round, clean the bathroom etc...) She sounded very surprised and made a comment along the lines of the house being pretty untidy if I need a few hours to clean it, as she just cleans hers as she goes (of course she does, there's only two of them living in the house!)

AIBU to think that most houses aren't tidy enough for overnight guests? There always seems to be things to sort and put away. Or am I actually living in squalor without knowing it?

I so wish it was but never is! adding a dog to the mix hasn't helped! The floor is usually covered by ripped up tissues and bits of wood that he steals from the fireplace!

We tend to do a few hours cleaning on the weekend but my absolute dream is to have a cleaner

I work from home and so does my husband and we only have a tiny house so - no we are not visitor ready because we have to tidy away all the work stuff. I make jewellery so the living room is full of my tools and craft stuff. Today it took three hours to tidy my stuff and run the hoover round.
The biggest question people ought to wonder about is whether their home is visitor accessible for people who use wheelchairs or have mobility difficulties. It is a shame that so many homes aren't and tidying up can't fix it.
