In the space of a week -
Wheeel bearing gone on car, garage reckons £100
Severe toothache, got dentist appt on Monday, I’ll be surprised if it’s not at least a filling
Bed just broke, like irreparably broken, the metal bar holding the mattress up has sheared apart.

Christmas was already on a tight budget this year as I had agreed DH could go on a weeks climbing holiday this month which wiped out all our extra cash.

Last year my handbrake went on my car at around the same time which costs £100s

Just having a moan really as if I moan at DH he will think I’m moaning about him having gone away.

Mattress on the floor can be really comfortable, could you do that until January sales?

supersop60 · 17/11/2017 09:14

I feel your pain OP. Moan away

Sympathies, but car repairs aren't unexpected. Neither are dentist's bills.

They will happen sooner or later and it's not putting money aside for such things, while DH going on a climbing holiday and planning to spend a lot of money on Christmas that's the issue here. It's not 'holier than thou' it's part of being an adult, realising the difference between wants and needs and prioritising your spending sensibly.

Sounds like you need help with budgeting. If you didn't have money put aside in case the car needed work (if you haven't spent anything on it since this time last year you've been incredibly lucky and a £100 bill is tiny really) your DH couldn't afford his climbing holiday and you can't afford to spend a lot on Christmas. Make the moneysavingexpert website your best friend, sign up to their weekly email and look at their advice on budgeting and cutting back on spending at Christmas.

My sympathies. They say that misfortunes come in threes, or it never rains but it pours. But let's try to look on the bright side (though I know that's difficult with toothache) after all this crap things can only get better, can't they?

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/11/2017 09:21

If your mattress bar that has broken is from Ikea, you can buy a new one for £10

If it's not Ikea, the Ikea one may fit anyway (it's adjustable) or the relevant shop or manufacturer may be able to help you.

One year my cooker broke three days before Christmas - that was a pain in the neck as we had to dash about finding somewhere that not only had one in stock but could deliver and fit it. And another year we had a water pipe leak under the sink which started gushing on Boxing Day and the day after that our patio door lock jammed and the door wouldn't close (it was snowing too, so we had a small snowdrift on the dining room carpet).
Sod's Law isn't it? We tend to find that financial blows tend to fall in early January rather than before Christmas though.

TheNaze73 · 17/11/2017 09:40

You have my full sympathy OP.

abbsisspartacus · 17/11/2017 09:50

I have toothache my car is in for it's mot a new food intolerance (joyful a milk free gluten free christmas) heart check up for the youngest today who might need glasses (more joy I can hardly get him to keep clothes on) a visit from my sister later (pray for me) more family issues than I can shake a stick at and I think if I bought wine today it would be gone in 60 seconds

Tbf I would have these issues even if it wasn't Christmas I just think FFS it's nearly Christmas! Grinit's all rather dramatic when we are supposed to be having fun

abbsisspartacus · 17/11/2017 09:52

My bed broke months ago the middle bar lost it's leg holding me up so I'm propped up by a metal box now all my nuts and bolts are coming loose 😂😂😂I will be on the floor soon too

BrieAndChilli · 17/11/2017 10:07

OP have you got a charity that does furniture near you? because you can get items usually for free with a small delivery charge or ask on freecycle as well.People give all sorts of good things away.
Also for anyone on here who has toothache OP included please put this first for getting sorted out because it can get excruciating and you dont want that especially over the Xmas period.

2.5K on new boiler here! Not happy and have had to borrow some as even though we had savings it was not enough. Christmas will be somewhat frugal this year especially as I am worried about my job. Everything in our house in the the edge of breaking now I think as we moved in 7 years ago! Cars are also old now!

TheWhyteRoseShallRiseAgain · 17/11/2017 10:48

Oh I feel your pain. Our washing machine literally went off with a bang and a puff of smoke, our patio door is gone (main door as front door been knackered for years) dd1s school seems to be always fundraising and she has some SEN and has been ice skating to try and bring her some confidence and help her make some friends and that has been eating money this month for a Christmas show but I don't want to pull her out when she has finally found something that makes her feel not "rubbish". I have thankfully most of Christmas done for the kids though

I'm not buying gifts this year either. It seems to cause as much strife either way...if I choose the wrong present etc etc. So I'm giving nothing to anyone this year and I don't want anyone to give anything to me.... except their time and attention. Also having to cook...buy food, prepare food etc on top of bills etc. Lost several friends and family this year....so that's made it cheaper! One I never send presents nor she send me but last email was a polite way of saying 'i'm bored of all your whinging now, just get on with it'.
