Minor car accident last night, now what to do with insurance?

Last night I was coming up to a roundabout when a lorry went into the back of me. It was only a bump, I got out, had to yell at the lorry driver to get out, he didn't see the issue. We looked at my car and there's some minor scraping to the paint job. He was working for an UK company but didn't speak much english. I told him i'd call the police if he didn't give me his insurance details which I think he did (he had a form in his cabby that we both filled out). Now, he's with Aviva, do I just call up his insurance and tell them what happened? Or do I have to get the work priced up first? Or do I contact my insurers first?

I only passed my test 6 months ago, and i'm under 25 so I pay out of the roof for my insurance, this won't affect my insurance in any way?

I can't believe i'm so clueless what to do, i've done some googling, and looked around the Aviva site but no avail.

Raven it's probably an accident management company - they seem like a great idea at the time and do all the work for you, but are a pain in the arse of there's a dispute and you end up having to go to court over it all...try to get his insurer to sort it all direct, so much easier in the long run.

I'm 100% sure this will effect your premiums but chances are it will be absorbed by the discount for 1 years no-claims and for having your license over a year. So it will be 'more' but probably still less than this years!

And please do tell your insurance company, DP bought a car from a local used car dealer and after having it MOT'd elsewhere they suspect its been in an unreported accident and isn't really safe to drive so we're left £1000s out of pocket and could have been seriously injured because of a selfish driver (and the shady garage obviously).

"I'm 100% sure this will effect your premiums"

Why? It wasn't the OP's fault. My no fault claim didn't affect my premium.

scurryfunge · 15/11/2017 17:25

We've never had a no fault claim affect our premiums.

I was hit while stopped at traffic lights, the other party accepted full liability and my insurance went up by around 25% with Diamond. Insurance companies like Aviva and Direct Line might not increase premiums after a non-fault accident but they also don't offer competitively priced insurance for anyone under 50, and definitely not for brand new drivers.

scurryfunge · 15/11/2017 17:41

Cat mum , I suspect that may be the issue. I am v.old with 30 years+ driving so it may be good old ageism at play here.

"companies like Aviva and Direct Line might not increase premiums after a non-fault accident but they also don't offer competitively priced insurance for anyone under 50"

I have been with Aviva for years, and they have always been more competitive than anyone else, even before I turned 50. However, like scurry I am over 50 and probably pay far less now than I would if I had been 30 years younger.

I think you only find out how good an insurance company is when you actually need to make a claim. And in my case I found Aviva did what they said on the tin.

Agree you should get your car checked out.Somebody reversed into our car in a car park last year. On the surface there appeared to be very little damage. However, when we took it to the garage, they pointed out stuff we hadn't even noticed. The bill for repair was over £1000.

Glittertwins · 15/11/2017 18:14

Another one for getting insurance to review. You have no idea what damage could have been caused to the chassis especially if you were pushed 5m. If there then becomes a problem in the coming weeks or months, you won’t have any recompense. Get it sorted

GreenTulips · 15/11/2017 18:22

If you do claim , do so thru his insurance because you will get more

What rubbish!!

Your company deal with the claimnon your behalf and send the other company the bill.

You get what it costs and no more

Non fault claim won't reduce your no claims bonus (premiums still go up but you keep the discount - they would go up with or with out any accident otherwise we'd all be paying 3 and 6
