Birthday Issue AIBU

Last week a new girl started in my department and today is her birthday so she brought in some lovely cakes and seems nice so far.

My aibu is this. Another team member, the only male loves to bake and has an odd sense of humour. Sometimes I can't tell if he's joking or not. He brought some biscuits he'd made in earlier in the week which led to the new girl saying today is her birthday and she'll bring cakes for us.

Today male-colleague brought another two containers of new biscuits in and the girl brought her cakes. I thought this was a bit off knowing it was her birthday but didn't initially feel it was my place to say anything. Every time someone popped in and she offered a cake, he'd pipe up saying come have a biscuit instead etc. All in a 'jokey'/sarcastic way but I couldn't help feel sorry for her. I think after a few hours the comments were getting to her...would I be bu to say something to male-colleague?

Cake AND biscuits - can't see a problem here. Grin

Whisky2014 · 15/11/2017 13:20

I wouldn't say anything to him but I would just keep saying to the new girl how tasty her cakes were and how thoughtful she was for bringing them in. Or something!

Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 13:22

I did overhear him 'joke' to someone who popped in about this girl 'trying to steal his thunder' with her cakes...it would seem the opposite to me if anything. He knew she was doing it for a proper occasion whereas he can bake away to his hearts content any time. It was really weird

Yes, definitely praise cakes and new girl. And eat the cake as well. CakeGrin

Hisnamesblaine · 15/11/2017 13:25

He sounds like a fecking saddo

bettydraper31 · 15/11/2017 13:33

He seems like he needs to get a life/good shag to take his mind off things.

Agree with PP, wouldn't bother saying anything to him as your oxygen would be wasted but I would say to the girl how nice hers were and not to worry about the guys comments.

Tell him to apply for Bake Off if he thinks he's that good x

Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 13:39

That's the odd thing. The biscuits are nothing special, they're literally standard biscuit recipe with some sweets thrown in.

Thank you for the replies by the way!

I'd tell him he has serious competition as her baking is fab.

RhiWrites · 15/11/2017 14:00

I think he’s horrible and unwelcoming. Be extra nice to the new woman.

Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 14:01

She didn't make them, she bought them but they are fancy. I overheard him at one point say to her 'hey you're new' when she said something about his comments... I wanted to shout over, yes she is so we should be nicer to her not have some weird competition!

OP posts:
Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 14:02

So it's not just me thinking this is odd behaviour? They certainly don't have a relationship where you could joke like that as she's been here a week

lurkingnotlurking · 15/11/2017 14:03

I wouldn't rock the boat. You'll get less sugar from the both of them

Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 14:21

She only brought them for her birthday. From the comments from him I'd imagine it'll be the last time she bothers

OP posts:
Venusflytwat · 15/11/2017 14:23

“Oh Brian, leave her alone. Sue they’re lovely, thank you.”

The end.

Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 14:29

He's not the type that that would achieve anything. The girl did reply when he said about her stealing his thunder by saying it could be said it was the other way around as it was her actual birthday and he went red and still carried on with the comments

OP posts:
Venusflytwat · 15/11/2017 14:32

You asked if you would be unreasonable to say something- no, you wouldn’t.

HTH.

Roofonfire · 15/11/2017 14:33

he sounds like a nightmare

FizzyGreenWater · 15/11/2017 14:34

Sounds like she can hold her own.

Next time he bakes, do this:

AnnoyingBaker: 'Hey I've brought biscuits in everyone'
You: 'Oh really? Great! Are they the weird ones? Cheers'
AB: 'What do you mean weird ones?!'
You: Oh you know what I mean! They taste lovely though, I'll have one...'
AB: ?!

heh heh

Aeroflotgirl · 15/11/2017 14:37

Have both cake and biscuits. Oh yes please I would like a cake and a biscuit.

Aeroflotgirl · 15/11/2017 14:39

He sounds like a prize controlling, egotistical jerk.

Pancetta76 · 15/11/2017 14:54

I dont know, it sort of felt like watching him try and dominate the new girl that baking is his thing

OP posts:
FlouncyDoves · 15/11/2017 14:55

Both of them were BU. Cakes and biscuits are bad for you.

Allthebestnamesareused · 15/11/2017 14:56

Great cake today and the biscuits can wait until tomorrow - after ll they keep far better!

"Brian" is a dick!

wellyclad · 15/11/2017 14:58

He sounds like a Knob
