AIBU to expect more than one evening for homework?

My Year 7 daughter is getting more and more homework set on one day and due in the following day. Not a quick piece or finishing off work, but a piece that involves researching areas, collating the information together and then producing a good quality piece of work. I'm fed up of having to spend our evenings doing homework. AIBU to expect that they give them more than one evening to get homework done? She can have three pieces set like this and have other homework aswell.

Is there any facility for staying at school afterwards to research and complete the homework? Might make it easier for her to then separate school and home.

Yanbu. We are in the same boat and struggle to get homework done. Ds is 6 and goes to a childminder most evenings so doesn’t get home until gone 6.

There is a homework club two days a week, I also work long shifts and she often comes home before I do or goes to a friend or relatives house. She's really upset today because she's had one of these overnight pieces reset because it wasn't good enough for the teacher 😓

I'm a secondary teacher and at our school we're explicitly told to avoid doing that.

If it's any particular subject you should contact the teacher in question to ask for more time in future. If it's a whole school issue then contact a member of SLT (but if possible I'd contact the teachers first).

I think that's very poor policy, especially if a child has extra curricular activities or other commitments.

YANBU. I am a teacher; we have a policy of giving at least two evenings for each piece of homework. Does she have a homework timetable? We are expected to stick to a whole-school homework timetable which has been created to avoid bottlenecks in the week.

I would raise with her form tutor and ask for the homework policy and timetable.

Is there a homework timetable for her year which says which subjects should be setting homework and when? If so, and it's not being stuck to, YANBU to politely point that out.

Agree with everyone above. This is a bad policy and I think you should raise it with the school. I have 2 at secondary schools, one is always given a minimum of two nights to complete homework and the other is given 3. In addition the weeeknd is counted as one night. What if your child has hobbies and extra curricular activities. They still need time to do the things they enjoy.

Thanks for all of your replies, really appreciate the advice. I will investigate if they have a homework timetable and check the policy. She does a lot of extra-curricular activities and often takes homework with her to do in breaks etc. I am glad that it's not just me who thinks it's really poor to set and expect back so soon
