To wish I’d known years ago how good epilators are

After years of shaving I decided to buy an epilator. It’s bloody brilliant. Wish I’d known earlier.

I love mine. Hurt the first couple of times but done regularly it's fine. Used to have to shave my pits every day with a great deal of discomfort. I now epilate a couple of times a week and it's amazing!

60sname · 13/11/2017 20:37

I've had mine since I splashed out on it in freshers' week (16 years ago) - it's outlasted all my other appliances and still going strong

SonicBoomBoom · 13/11/2017 20:37

I love my epilator too. Use it on my legs and underarms.

I wish I could get IPL but alas, hair is too fair. I'm patiently waiting for the technology to advance so us scandi folk can join the fun.

YorkieDorkie · 13/11/2017 20:39

Mine is a Phillips Satinelle from about a decade ago so I'd say good choice!

TerribleTime · 13/11/2017 20:42

I've tried to use my epilator a couple of times but no matter how may times I run it over the hairs on my legs, it doesn't grab them at all. I'm lucky if I get 10% of the hairs.

Am I doing something different to everyone else?

RC1234 · 13/11/2017 20:48

Mine sounded like a hedge trimmer - which added to the anticipation of pain. Ghastly.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 13/11/2017 21:58

I've got an IPL thing. Did nothing for me. I have very fair skin, hair On my legs is fair so wasn't surprised it didn't work on them but bikini line and armpits are black hair so hoped it would do something - oh well...

catboygeckoandowlett · 13/11/2017 22:03

Ooowww!! Seriously? I had one when I was 14 - ooouuucchh! AND Bloody ouch!!! ... maybe the newer ones r less painful? I was put off for life!!

Catwithglasses · 13/11/2017 22:07

Does hurt but to me the need not to shave or make salon appts is worth it.

Only recently returned to mine since moving - gave up when my OH had friends round and thought it sounded like a vibrator through the ceiling 😂

Nannyplumbrocks · 13/11/2017 22:14

Nobody has mentioned laser hair removal. Im in the middle of my course. Its brilliant and best of all its permanent!

Believeitornot · 13/11/2017 22:17

Waxing and epilating my armpit hair was more painful than having fanjo injections post childbirth. Never again.

I have an epilator and it’s ok for my legs except for the bits near the ankle (Jesus it fucking hurts) or behind the knees.

PeiPeiPing · 13/11/2017 22:20

Nearly 40 posts in, and 5 and a half hours after the first post, and no-one has mentioned women 'bowing to the patriarchy' or 'bowing to societal expectations' yet? Shock

Colour me shocked!

totaldiva · 13/11/2017 22:25

Love mine. My mum had one when I was a teenager and I remember trying it and just about hitting the roof in pain! Now 25 years later I use mine regularly and don’t find it painful. I use a Philips one but it’s been cutting out so I’m in the market for a new one.

I’m not sure if epilator shave got better since the mid 90s or my pain threshold is better looking at you three children

CardsforKittens · 13/11/2017 22:35

I feel I'm a bit beyond the patriarchy's expectations. I'm nearly 50 and I shave only for comfort. I have eczema and I was surprised to find that shaving makes me less itchy. Currently considering an epilator but not sure if it's better than shaving. I did have one leg waxed once but chickened out (ran screaming from the room) before the other leg could be sorted. I may be exaggerating slightly. I've blocked out most of it. Are there good modern epilators?

wineusuallyhelps · 13/11/2017 22:42

I have a Silk Epil that is 20 years old and still going strong.

Are the latest ones any more advanced? Anyone had one back then and also now; and could compare? I don’t want to be missing out with my old fashioned one!

IrritatedUser1960 · 13/11/2017 22:46

How can you stand it!!! I tried it once and it yanked all my hairs out by the roots, it was hideously painful.

Clitoria · 14/11/2017 00:00

I got one for my armpits, it came with an ice pack which should have been my first clue that it was not going to go well.

Spent 10minutes enduring serious pain, in the end I looked in the mirror-armpits still completely hairy and now BLEEDING.
So I used it only from the knees down-less pain. Cue loads of red bumps of ingrown hairs.
Pure shite, waste of money, waste of plastic.

Sashkin · 14/11/2017 01:57

If you’ve waxed for a while, the roots aren’t that strong and it doesn’t really hurt.

I do think that professional waxing gives a better end result, but each monthly waxing session would cost more than the epilator did!

I use home wax for brazilians (I’ve tried epilating, it’s too risky Grin). But home waxing takes forever and is messy, so everything else gets epilated.

Sashkin · 14/11/2017 02:01

Clitoria, you need to trim the hair pretty short first or it gets tangled instead of pulled out cleanly. It’s no good for thickets - I’d shave everything off so you’re starting with a blank canvas, then use it twice a week so you’re only pulling a few hairs out at a time. And be super-careful not to get any skin trapped, that really does hurt.
