Colleague falling asleep...

....all the fucking time.

-NC as think a colleague is on here-

IKIABU and can't do anything about it but I have a colleague who literally sits and nods off at their desk, pretty much most of the day. Their work is mainly email based so they sit at the desk, nod off. No-one notices.

Sometimes it's really fucking obvious as I sit next to them because they wake with a start/snort etc.

It's really grating on me because I'm rushed off my feet with shit and they sit there snoring. Then waddle off for a fag. Then have dinner.

I've tried making noise to make them jump etc and I've even said "Seriously, you need to stop this" They get paid more than me and seem to do fuck all but nod off all day

ARRRRRRRRRRRGH

My lovely ex colleague used to do this. He is a genuinely great guy who was mortified about it, but wouldn't go to the doctors until work banned him from driving the company pool cars during to him nodding off constantly. It turned out he has sleep apnoea, and his constant microsleeps were bloody dangerous.

A year on, he'd lost lots of weight, and it never happened again. I don't know the ins and outs of his treatment.

I had an old colleague who did this. He was Nigerian and claimed it was a 'cultural' thing as they would have afternoon naps there. Funnily enough none of my other Nigerian colleagues did this. It was infuriating and it pissed loads of people off. Thankfully he was made redundant so we don't have to deal with it any more!

BenLui · 14/11/2017 13:29

I’ve worked with two colleagues in two different companies who did this, one male and one female.

Both had serious health issues which weren’t otherwise noticeable. Their bosses and HR were aware and supportive. The rest of us politely pretended it wasn’t happening.

I presume your previous issues with this guy are causing you to be angry about this.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 14/11/2017 13:36

Used to work with an office sleeper, annoyingly though they never missed a deadline and actually submitted a high standard of work. Maybe I was just jealous that they could sleep for quarter of the working day and still complete their work load.

There is some element of truth in this, I worked all over west Africa for years and afternoon naps were surprisingly common. There was a lot of pisstaking as well with people rolling into the office mid morning or turning up to meetings half an hour late with the excuse being 'feeling a bit sleepy'. It was impossible to get anything meaningful done so I had to roll out a core hour scheme and come down hard on persistent offenders. I was not popular!!

purplebaubles111 · 14/11/2017 14:01

BenLui I wouldnt say so. All of that is in the past and on the whole, we get on really well. It's annoying when you work your bum off and get all sorts of shit thrown at you and someone is sat merrily nodding off and getting all the praise in the world

Well purple from what you say he doesn’t do the same role as you, so his doing less work doesn’t impact how busy you are.

And if he’s getting praise despite being asleep half the time then he is presumably doing a very good job.

You’ve reported it to your manager. Leave the man alone now and focus on your own work.

LittleLionMansMummy · 14/11/2017 14:19

I've worked with two colleagues like this. One of them was awake most of the night with a combination of insomnia and researching stuff, so wasn't getting enough sleep. The other is a current colleague who is on a huge cocktail of multiple medications and consistently looks like he's away with the fairies when not nodding off. Poor chap is in a lot of pain most of the time and depressed to boot. Slowing down isn't in his genetic makeup though unfortunately, so he tries to persevere through it all, both to his own and the company's detriment Sad

AtlanticWaves · 14/11/2017 14:26

I fell asleep most mornings for several months, just for 10 minutes. I thought it was just sheer exhaustion (my DC will not sleep) but after a while I linked it to my migraine meds so had to change them and since then was fine.

I didn't tell anyone though - none of their business. And I still got all my work done.

afrikat · 14/11/2017 16:16

pangalactic that sounds very familiar! This bloke had zero respect for time keeping and was frequently late to meetings etc. Seemed to think we should all just accept it because cultural. When he was made redundant he tried desperately to find another job within the company but unsurprisingly no one would give him a look in 😏

Yeah I got a bit of stick at first for not respecting cultural norms but it was turning into a complete piss take. I was working for a major oil and gas operator and it was impossible to meet targets when a quarter of your team are playing the sleepy card. It had been going on for years with little to no consequence, it was astonishing. One chap on the strength of a two hour afternoon flight from Accra to Lagos the previous day felt he was entitled to the following day off because he was tired. Told him to be in first thing or not to bother coming back at all. Strangely he made it in. Took at least three months before the office was running with any degree of efficiency.

afrikat · 14/11/2017 17:46

pangalactic well done it sounds like a very hard job!
