To send DD to school in damaged boots.

The zip has broken on her school boots.
They do up ok, the zip is bust half way down, so it is harder to get them on and off, as you can't pull the zip down all the way.
They are otherwise fine.
I think it is OK to carry on wearing them, at least until the end of term, when I might pick something up in the sales. My friend is horrified, and it made me doubt myself.
Other people don't rush out buying new ones for something like this, do they?

Oh, lots of replies, and they seem fairly split down the middle.

Yes, she can get them on and off by herself, and do up the rest of the zip. I hadn't actually noticed they were broken, you can't really see when they are on, so she was the one who pointed it out. I suspect she has caused the damage herself by yanking the zip, but hey ho.

She's 6, so does have to take them off and on in school a fair bit. I am aware they might break more, and if they do I will obviously replace straight away.

The teeth at the bottom look a bit bent out of shape, and I think there might be some fluff caught in them - I will try and see if I can repair them myself, I didn't know the pencil lead trick.

She wears boots because we have a fairly long walk to school, and they are warmer than shoes and (I thought!) sturdy. They are not new - I got them in February, so I can't return them.
They are nice quality, really soft and flexible. I'd rather replace with something of similar quality in the sale if I can eke them out until then.

Boots aren't particularly comfortable to wear all day in school though.

Personally I'd replace with school shoes and wellies for the walk/playtime

My DDs both get long winter boots for school each winter. They are good quality and very comfy. Their feet would freeze in shoes. Wellies are impractical when it can be perfectly dry in the morning and chucking it down by home time. The majority of girls wear boots to school, but living on the coast of NE Scotland may well be the reason that kids have full-on winter gear.

Every child does their daily walk-a-mile around the playground, and that goes ahead in all types of weather.

My dd's school is v hot inside. So it wouldn't be good for them to have boots inside. Walk to school in boots and have shoes to change into when she gets there?

OwlKiss · 12/11/2017 19:17

They are ankle boots rather than knee-high ones.
I don't consider them to be uncomfortable - and DD is pretty fussy about that sort of thing and would definitely have told me if she thought they were. That's part of the reason I want to hang on to them, they have a really nice flexible sole, whereas lots of other sturdy, weatherproof shoes tend to have quite stiff chunky soles.

I think soft leather boots are a better alternative to wellies for our circumstances. Wellies are not particularly supportive or warm for 2 daily mile walks along pavements, and cloakroom space is at a massive premium, so it would be a bit selfish to have a bag of boots hanging up in there every day.

Anyway, I have taken everyone's comments on-board. I think we are going to walk to the shops after school tomorrow and have a look in the charity shops in the hope of finding something, and if there is nothing, we will maybe try and drive to the shoe shop in the next town on Saturday . Can't go in the week, unfortunately, as don't have the car until after the shops have shut.
