Often while diving around I'll find my self stoped at the front of traffic lights. So I apply the handbrake and await the signal to go green again. Often I find the car next to be will just keep creeping forwards, sometimes half way across the junction by time lights change again. Then I will pull away and they'll still be standing Confused

@gamerchick

If I didn’t apply my brake, my car would creep forward. The joys of owning an automatic.

I’d rather stay behind the line, but apologies if I burn your retinas.

MummySparkle · 12/11/2017 23:32

tiredtomybones surely it would be giving my right foot a break as I can take it off the brake? I always take car out if gear so left foot gets a rest. Or Dagnabit are you a clutch-burner

Well if you’re an automatic you’re unlikely to be driving a high off the ground beast/proper car so you’re alright Wink

Eh?

berliozwooler · 13/11/2017 01:56

I put the handbrake on as it switches the engine off and saves fuel. Handbrake and ignition automatically release/come on as I prepare to move off so it's no quicker to sit on the brake.

Feliciaxxx · 13/11/2017 02:24

Newly passed drivers - are you also taught not to bother indicating?? Because 80% of folk don't seem to and it drives me potty! Laziness? Stupidity? Or an erroneous assumption that the rest of us are fecking psychic? . . . or just out of fashion and uncool??

ConfusedLivingDoll · 13/11/2017 03:28

I learned in Scandinavia years ago and have a licence to drive trucks too (C) and obvs. did a separate test for those. Hand brakes were only ever mentioned in relation to hill starts (as optional), and to be avoided when stationary in the winter, especially when left on for a few hours or longer, as it can freeze up.

Also, I've never heard or even imagined that break lights could be seen as bad or "dazzling". IME, headlights can be, but not brake lights. On the contrary, brake lights are good, as they alert drivers to see that cars in front are braking or stationary even if the lights are green (but queue is not yet moving because of slow busy traffic, someone distracted or stalled, broken down or whatever).

ConfusedLivingDoll · 13/11/2017 03:31

I sometimes creep to save from coming to a full stop (important for heavy goods vechile driving so I've sort of retained the habit), but never over the line. That is illegal!

1DAD2KIDS · 13/11/2017 08:39

ConfusedLivingDoll when I drove Hgv's in the military I would use tones more forward planning to ensure I keep moving. Including slow approaches to the lights. But then forward planning is far more important in truck. Our trucks were all manual gear box, often getting a bit ropey and some were 60s vintage (left before I got my hands on one of the new MAN SVs).

I always indicate felicia. I hated learning to drive on busy roundabouts where people either don't indicate or leave them on but don't come off.

TheSecondOfHerName · 13/11/2017 09:27

Not sure having an automatic transmission is predictive of the size of the car.
I drive two automatics: a Toyota IQ and a Renault Grand Espace. I feel I've mostly covered the possible size range. 😄

IfNot · 13/11/2017 09:36

It's not new drivers that don't indicate! It's arrogant as fuck idiots who have been driving years and think they own the road.

RaeCJ82 · 13/11/2017 09:38

It’s not at all predictive of the size of the car. A lot of big, expensive cars (think Range Rovers and 5 series Beemers) are automatic. Personally I would never buy a small, cheap slushomatic because the automatic transmissions are usually awful!

I was taking the piss. I’m actually considering an automatic, they look much less of a ball ache than a manual.

Yep I’ve found that as well ^^

OliviaStabler · 13/11/2017 09:44

The creeping I see is where a car moves forwards as far as possible in the lane turning right, and as soon as the lights change they speed off and cut in front of the lane going straight ahead. Really annoying but no way to stop them.
