Do you, or have you ever, worked in a very famous building?

I've just lost the best part of a day watching Designated Survivor and it has made me think about all of the behind-the-scenes people who work in The White House, or Buckingham Palace, or any kind of place like that.

Does anyone have any exciting stories of what it is actually like?

I work in One Canada Square. Also (incorrectly) known as ‘Canary Wharf’. It’s the one with the big pointy roof with the red flashing light in Canary Wharf.

It’s a nice place to have an office. I work about two thirds of the way up and the lift takes

Tryingtogetitright · 11/11/2017 21:05

I used to work in the Walkie Talkie. Loved it! Always felt very snazzy walking past the queue of tourists waiting to go in and just flashing my pass!

Standingcat · 11/11/2017 21:07

I regularly attend events at the BT Tower, the view is incredible

Antoniacaenis · 11/11/2017 21:09

Once went to an interview at Hampton Court Palace. Didn't actually get the job though!

ferriswheel · 11/11/2017 21:10

This all sounds very exciting! Has anyone worked in London Underground? Is there really a station by Buckingham Palace?

I've been to meetings in Lloyds of London and the Bank of England. Both were very different but pretty cool.

ferriswheel · 11/11/2017 21:14

Francis

What makes it amazing? The layout? Or the information?

I worked in Canary Wharf tower 20 years ago when there were no other tall buildings next to it. I was not long out of Uni and going up in the lifts made me feel like a proper grown up in a film. The view was stunning. I watched the millenium dome being built from my office.

liquidrevolution my DH would love your job. He has just qualified with a relevant MA so hopefully he will get to use it beyond urban exploration in his spare time.

toffeepumpkins · 11/11/2017 21:17

I once worked in a cave, does that count?

TheSconeOfStone · 11/11/2017 21:17

Cross post District. I loved working there back then. It was much smaller and had a community feel to it I don't recognise the place now.

Freshprincess · 11/11/2017 21:17

Not in the same league as most of these but old building which has an interesting history and is a bit of a tourist attraction in my city. it was beautiful in the areas the public saw but after a while you stop noticing it. thenmain offices were a bit dull though. Suspended Ceilings and they covered up a lot of the wood panelling in case it got damaged. You'd sometimes get tourist wandering around the offices taking photos.

We used to have a bit of TV filming there as well. Usually period dramas.

eurochick · 11/11/2017 21:18

I've worked in Tower 42 (what used to be called the Nat West Tower). I now work next door to a very famous building - St. Paul's.

Pollaidh · 11/11/2017 21:20

I've worked or had regular meetings in the Natural History Museum, some famous university buildings, FCO, parliament, embassies (ours and others), and frequently have meetings in foreign parliaments, senates, palaces etc.

NameChangeFamousFolk · 11/11/2017 21:21

My close relation works at Parliament. She loves it. When she had to stop for while in the last few years, she missed it terribly, but is back now and has no plans to move for a bit Grin

Great thread.

Movingon1611 · 11/11/2017 21:22

Not technically a building but I worked at the London Eye for a couple of years whilst I was doing my degree.
Amazing view from the loading platform, I absolutely loved working there with that view

Lemongrass57 · 11/11/2017 21:23

I don’t know @ferriswheel but I doubt it given how close Green Park station is. I love the idea though

Pollaidh · 11/11/2017 21:23

The NHM is a rabbit warren behind the scenes. The other buildings you get used to over time, but then you'll see the stone in a certain light or something and realise how privileged you are.

Oh, I've also worked at Sellafield.

district · 11/11/2017 21:23

@TheSconeOfStone I work on the 02 side of the building. Great view. If I ever need a break I just wander around the office staring out of various windows. I never get bored of the view.

The CW area in general is rammed full of jumped up arseholes now though. It is a snobby, cold, impersonal space. Don’t even get me started on the food prices. Envy

tinypop4 · 11/11/2017 21:24

I spent my gap year working in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden

greyfriarskitty · 11/11/2017 21:24

TV centre was an amazing building, walking past daleks to get a coffee and loads of odd corridors in the basement too. Doing tv gets you into all sorts of strange places - one of the most memorable was filming in (a very rickety) Bankside Power Station before it was converted into Tate Modern.

I also used to work in the V&A as well. We had to sign the Official Secrets Act, although I am not entirely sure why.

district · 11/11/2017 21:25

@Pollaidh Would love to hear more about Sellafield. I’m fascinated by places like that.

ihatethecold · 11/11/2017 21:25

My dh has just retired from royalty protection working at Buckingham palace.
