Child labor, orphan, poverty, awful behavior by grown ups, death and happy ever after because she goes to heaven (we are a non religious school). And somewhere woven into the story is the nativity! I haven't seen the script, but feel quite uncomfortable about the subject matter. I'm not saying anything to he school, but just wondered what others thought about it.

Remembering the poor and marginalised is (supposed to be) at the centre of the Christmas message. A lot of the older Christmas carols speak a lot of the poor circumstances of Jesus' birth and the precariousness of this period of his life. I think doing a play like this is a good antidote to the idea that we've done enough if we pack a bloody shoebox and can get back to celebrating.

I agree with all the others saying Christmas is absolutely the time to remember the message of the story - it is supposed to be a time for reflection as well as celebration.

It's part of the tradition of poignant tales to remind us to take care of the poor and needy that Dickens is a major part of. A Christmas Carol has similar themes.
