fireworks on Remembrance Day - yes or no

There are masses of fireworks going off round here, we've just been discussing whether or not they are right or wrong to have them on Remembrance Day. I'm on the fence but my friend is adamant that it's disrespectful.

We had some last night too - I was not impressed. DDog is sick of them.

BIL has PTSD (combat related) and up until the other day I’d never seen him during fireworks. One huge one went out behind our house and he hit the floor, he was in absolute bits. It was horrifically distressing to see, and countless times worse for him. There just isn’t any fucking need for fireworks on public sale. There just isn’t. The distress and harm they cause is always overridden by people wailing “but we WANT them!” Much like gunowners in the US.

Yes or no ...??? NO, NO and NO again. Utterly disrespectful.

KimmySchmidt1 · 12/11/2017 17:00

Bloody insensitive and thick - fireworks are usually a celebration so why would you have them on Remembrance Day other than to take the piss? There is something jeering about them which is incredibly rude on a day when we are supposed to be solemnly valuing peace, not mimicking the sound of large numbers of people getting blown up.

As I said on another thread I think it is awful behaviour. But I have been told to fuck off not being English. I guess that's that Confused

Mittens1969 · 12/11/2017 17:10

Very disrespectful imo. Fireworks can be very distressing for people coping with combat related PTSD. My MIL, who lived through the blitz, has reacted to them in the past. Totally inappropriate.

I also have cats so I definitely wouldn’t be pleased if there were any around here. Hmm

Notreallyarsed · 12/11/2017 17:10

WhatwouldAryado I’m no English either Smile

Rosieposy4 · 12/11/2017 17:14

Triple agree with notreallyarsed and many others.
Totally inappropriate due to many vets suffering from PTSD, often teiggered by loud bangs.
In addition there have now been fireworks going off for about three bloody weeks, harsh on animals as well.
Bonfire night was last Sunday, in case anyone hadn't noticed there was a Saturday pretty close to it.

DJBaggySmalls · 12/11/2017 17:17

Massively disrespectful IMO, not just because of veterans with PTSD, but really does it feel like they're taking taking the piss.

ForalltheSaints · 12/11/2017 17:29

No, inappropriate. Another reason to have designated days only for fireworks.

SauvignonBlanche · 12/11/2017 17:32

Fuck, no.
