To hate the soppy Christmas ads (I see you, John Lewis) and how they take a classic song and destroy it

I hate all those wet, faux sentimental Christmas ads with a purple passion. I particularly hate how they take a classic song and turn it into something that sounds like it is being sung by a dying dog..that needs a wee..and a poo. Don't get me wrong I looove Christmas but those adverts..just..no!

Carb totally agree with you. These Christmas ads must cost millions to produce. I would have more respect for John Lewis, M & S etc if the money was given to help the homeless and other charities instead.

Lethaldrizzle · 10/11/2017 14:55

The Beatles didn't write their own music? ! And Mary was a virgin Hmm

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 10/11/2017 14:57

I think Jennifer Hudson ruined Golden Slumbers.....

I digress. I don’t like the JL ad this year. It’s meh. It’s not really about anything is it?

DB22 · 10/11/2017 15:36

Well, I just watched and it and had a little sob. My DS is going through a monster under the bed phase at the moment. I must be a wuss Confused

Jojoanna · 10/11/2017 18:17

Wtf the Beatles didn't write there own music ?! Ridiculous

StoorieHoose · 10/11/2017 18:19

gillybeanz are you on glue?

ILoveMillhousesDad · 10/11/2017 18:21

And the female vocalists always have that wimpy will o the wisp voice with no substance.

Fucking YES to this.

It's like the marketing people go 'right, what upbeat song can we slow down for a female to sing in a weak, angsty voice'

People are pathetic over the excitement of these ads.

StoorieHoose · 10/11/2017 18:22

I despise breathy singers ruining perfectly good songs! I had a good old rant under my old username the year that they murdered a Smiths song —and the daily mail fuckers printed it—

strugglingtodomybest · 10/11/2017 20:16

Totally agree OP. Load of fucking shit designed to make us spend more and earlier. Hate them all.

strugglingtodomybest · 10/11/2017 20:17

People are pathetic over the excitement of these ads.

Agree. What is wrong with people that they get excited over an advert of all things. Saddos!

Ragusa · 10/11/2017 20:19

I would usually agree.

But this year it's Guy Garvey so all bets are naturally off.

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 10/11/2017 20:23

I’ve not forgiven them for the year they took my most favourite song ever (Somewhere only we know by Keane) and chewed it up and spat it out of Lilly fucking Allen’s gob! 😡😡😡

I do like Tom O’del though who did one of the other ones.

Crunchymum · 10/11/2017 20:30

Slightly OT but I love Rufus Wainwrights rendition of "Across The Universe

Far superior version.

Not an Xmas ad though. Was Samsung S8 I think?

beepbeeprichie · 10/11/2017 20:33

YADNBU OP. All utter crap. Apart from M&S and the unintentional "fck you little bear" piece. I won't forward through that one.
Each year these department store adverts become less Christmassy and more self indulgent and I hate them. Especially a monster called Moz. Isn't that Morrissey's nickname? I hate him too Grin
The only good one was the wee boy wanting to get to xmas day to give the gift to his parents. That did make me emotional as it reminded me of my dad who was all about spoiling us and not too bothered about what he received.

beepbeeprichie · 10/11/2017 20:33

Oh Tits yes that one was spectacularly guff.

midnightmisssuki · 10/11/2017 20:36

but its just an ad... why so much hate?! Confused

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/11/2017 20:38

Why not? There’s tonnes of love.
Balance innit.

I’m with you OP. It’s been boggling me for years.

MadisonAvenue · 10/11/2017 20:39

I hate all of the hype surrounding them.

I do love Guy Garvey's voice though, which song is he covering?

I will admit to watching the Boots one earlier today, that was actually really nice.

Viserion · 10/11/2017 20:45

Have managed to avoid it so far. I am another hater of the mawkish sentimental Christmas crap adverts. And to take a Beatles song and ruin in is the royal icing on the stale fruitcake.

MsLumley · 10/11/2017 21:07

Wow. How anyone can say that Guy Garvey's voice ruins anything is a total travesty. I won't have it.

Littleraincloud · 10/11/2017 21:13

I too have noticed the trend for pathetic vocals

LinaBo · 10/11/2017 21:14

They could have a blank screen with Guy Garvey singing and it would still be a brilliant advert Grin misses the point of the thread

Timefortea99 · 10/11/2017 21:14

I went to a John Lewis today and at the top of the escalator was a tv showing the ad on a loop and a massive rack of furry toys - a dark mass of fur who I assume is the star of the ad. I didn't stop to watch. I just felt a bit queasy of the commercialism of it all. (I was in there for towels but the fact that I am in a shop at all buying stuff could be seen as hypocritical but it is the hijacking of occasions in this country as a means to rake in £ that makes me a bit sniffy.)

mrsharrison · 10/11/2017 21:18

That "she's always a woman" one a few years ago that had everyone crying. All i saw was an actress who was the victim of an untalented make up dept. A job lot of talc in the hair doesnt make someone look older. Just makes them look clownish. Oh how i laughed.

MistressDeeCee · 10/11/2017 21:19

I really hate this trend for slowed down songs sung in some weird cockney-esque accent by a woman with a creepy breathy voice

^This. It sounds so bloody stupid who on earth thought this up?

I cannot stand the way as soon as end of October hits, there's a whole relentless "right, we want your money now" feel to the run-up to Christmas. Its a completely commercial season to benefit businesses only, and I wish to God so many people wouldn't buy into it.
