AIBU?

To ask you what you ended up doing with your law degree

Namechange but been on here for a while (not that i've ever posted anything exciting anyway). Pinky promise I'm not a lazy journalist.
Almost all of the careers stuff at uni pertains to corporate law, which I don't think I'd fancy. We were also recently set a piece of reading about depression amongst femal lawyers which was... disheartening...!
I have no clue what I'm aiming for, really.
So AIBU to ask what career you ended up in after doing a law degree and why?

Qualified. Run a litigation team. Burning out from long hours and having the majority of childcare responsibilities.

I run a food manufacturing company - absolutely zero to do with law these days! I genuinely think it’s a terrible career for a woman - just too much sacrifice required and I wasn’t prepared to sacrifice my life.

I'm an in house lawyer. Thoroughly love it. Good work life balance, mix of workload and nice colleagues.

Would never go back into private practice though.....

Did a stint in private practice and now work in house in the financial services sector in a corporate/governance role. In house life suits me much better and is without a doubt more family friendly Smile Lega

I haven't used mine. Started my LLB, knew that law wasn't going to be for me, finished it. Looked for any job, got a job as admin in social services and have worked my way (slightly) up from there.
Probably wouldn't have got my first job without the degree as had no experience but definitely didn't need a degree to do the job!

I became a pensions consultant, but ended up in a careee dead end. Then I joined a law firm and eventually qualified as a pensions lawyer.

A lot of law isn't family friendly, but I currently have a great employer and a DH who bears more than his fair share of childcare.

I'm a high street solicitor but looking to leave soon. It really isn't family friendly in my experience (and with a far more understanding than usual firm).

My sister was a corporate solicitor. She is now a PHd student in a field related to her original degree. She hated corporate law...
Another friend has a law degree and now works for HMRC, I think in a tax inspector / accounting role. He didn't do a LPC.

Got onto a civil service graduate scheme with it where I then qualified as an accountant. Having both allowed me to pursue a career as a Commercial Manager for major bids where I mainly negotiate contracts and pricing. Current job is very family friendly and I’ve been fortunate enough to be in a more comfortable position than some of my peers who went onto do training contracts with regional firms. I occasionally consider whether I should still be a solicitor but it would be quite a step down now and I still use a lot of the legal knowledge I gained but in an ‘in-house’ capacity.

Retrained as a primary school teacher shortly after qualifying! Best decision I have ever made Smile working as a solicitor is a great career for some, but for me it just wasn't right. I find teaching to be so much more rewarding, even if it is hectic!

I’m a solicitor, spent many years doing employment law and HR consultancy though, was very family friendly.

Solicitor in a big national practice. They are flexible to a point but it’s still hard going with DS. Not sure about this long term but not really sure what’s next. Useful pointers in pp’s thx.

Btw I still enjoy the legal work & the clients (I advise businesses) but the politics of being in a big law firm are beyond belief and when it’s busy (most of the time) flexible working just means starting again once ds is in bed & working til midnight. Not sustainable long term.

Welfare Rights.
Not especially well paid but interesting and useful work. Family friendly hours usually not a problem either.
Plus plenty of jobs available in areas with cheap housing. For obvious reasons Grin

I worked in private practice for ten years in niche area. Now a self employed consultant - love it. Law firm hols not much good for childcare and the job I do now is far more interesting. Most of the interesting bits of my previous job but none of the boring bits.

I will probably try to get a job in the next year or so alongside, as I will be applying for mortgages etc

Qualified, then retrained as an accountant. Ended up as a financial controller in the nhs, and also in the civil service. Legal private practice bored me rigid!
