To ask for alternatives to Samaritans purse

DS came home from school with a letter yesterday along with a flyer for samaritans purse.

I've vaguely explained to him that we won't be doing the box for school but we will put some toys in the foodbank/supermarket collection and maybe do our own

I would like us to do one but also to provide school with an alternative. I tried to explain at drop off why but the breakfast club nanny looked a bit blank.

Can anyone suggest an alternative collection and if you have to hand any of the links to the info on SP I can send them? (it was quite a while since I read but I have seen on here recently)

Thanks all- I knew I'd seen something on here, will look now.

Fingers crossed I can get them to move to a different charity/cause

I just don't get all this stuff about SP and I'm not sure I can believe it.
My mum has been involved in SP for years with shoebox appeal: organising locally and went on several distributions trips and she said non of the things claimed happened on any of the trips she went on. She isn't to naive to notice either.

My DH forwarded a few links from samaritans purse own website to the head teacher last. I'm not entirely sure what he said, but the shoe box collection has been quietly dropped.

Just seen that Humanists UK have a template letter to send to schools.

wombat where did she go to distribute? There is also a lot of reports of the head of the organisation's racist and homophobic views, which I'm sure your mum doesn't share, and might not be aparant to a lot of the volunteers.

Justa she's been all over Eastern Europe with them.
Yes I'm sure you're right about many of them having homophobic views etc. Whilst I think it's completely wrong and disagree with them, as long as it isn't shown to those receiving the boxes I don't know of if I agree that children shouldn't receive the boxes.
I don't know. I guess I just find it hard to accept a charity I thought I knew well maybe doesn't act the way it should.

Last year I complained to Santander that our local branch had agreed to collect boxes for operation christmas child. This year I complained to Sainsbury's about the same. They were both swiftly removed.

Samaritan's Purse is a vile organisation and operation Christmas child is a fucking stupid idea. As a former aid worker, I'd strongly suggest giving the money you would have spent on a Christmas box to a reputable charity instead where it will be put to far better use.

The Metropolitan Police Christmas Appeal is now open

www.met.police.uk/applyregister/met-christmas-appeal/

You have to take the presents to a Met Police Station so it's only suitable if you're near London though
