To think I can cut my own hair

Well, just my fringe mostly.... Like, how hard can it be?? 😂 Any tips before I start hacking away?

Big difference between ‘can’ and should.

RosaDeZoett · 09/11/2017 20:22

Lol Matilda, ain't that the truth Grin But I am emboldened, thanks for all the excellent tips, especially the springing up when it's dry, which seems obvious, but hadn't occurred to me. My hairdressers probably do do free fringe trim, but tbh I'd be embarking on the diy-do partly because I find it hard to get the time to get in for an appointment.
I think I'm going to chance it but will check out YouTube, buy professional scissors, and look at the link also. Thanks folks! BTW, does it matter that I have short hair, sort of pixie cut?? I figured mistakes would actually be less noticeable....

I sometimes trim my pixie cut inbetween hairdresser cuts. I use clippers and a number 12 attachment, and it looks fine. But I have been using clippers on son's hair with good results for years and am quite confident with them. I actually cut my first pixie with them from a long bob!

My hairdresser thinks I do a pretty good job, but I only take a little off to keep it sharp, I bleach it myself too.

BackBoiler · 09/11/2017 20:30

I gather mine into a ponytail with my hands, twist and then cut the ends off the whole lot! I have curly hair though and it looks fabulous Grin

MilibandStoleMySonsName · 09/11/2017 20:32

I do the mn haircut but didn't realise that was what it was.

RosaDeZoett · 09/11/2017 20:37

Hmmm clippers eh? Now there's an idea.... Lordy I could do serious damage though! Maybe I should practice on the kids first....

I did the MN haircut for a year until I got a bit scissor-happy once and made a pig's ear of it and ended up with a sort of mullet. Now I pay £15 for a mobile hairdresser to come and do a much better job, probably spending less time on it than I do.

Uokbing · 09/11/2017 21:03

When I used to have long hair and a fringe I used to do the MN haircut and also cut my fringe. It was really easy and I saved a fortune!

I always remember the poster who said she did the MN haircut and ended up looking like Cadfael! 😂

SugarMiceInTheRain · 09/11/2017 21:06

I successfully did the MN haircut a couple of times when I had long hair. Worked fine. I need a fringe though now to cover all the lines!

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 09/11/2017 21:16

Go for it if you wish, your hair.
The amount of people I have come in as walk ins in my salon bevause they tried copying DIY hair cut YouTube videos and botched their hair up badly.

Because they have the same attitude as the comment you made in the original post
Like, how hard can it be??

Hint - Very.

Almostfifty · 09/11/2017 21:18

Don't cut it straight across, take bits sideways along and take the very ends off then repeat all the way across until it's short enough.

Uokbing · 09/11/2017 21:25

The secret to cutting your own hair is to do it a teeny amount at a time, and keep checking it and you can't really go wrong. It takes longer but you generally avoid any disasters that way.

Ethylred · 09/11/2017 21:30

Go ahead but you will look like an Anglo-Saxon peasant. Possibly even a villein. [Remember villeins? History innit.]

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/11/2017 21:40

I have long rest of hair which I get properly trimmed when I can be arsed. Fringe needs more frequent care so I cut it myself once a fortnight. It's sweepy and I used a technique from a YouTube video.

Have a search and find something similar to your own style. I got hairdressing scissors for pennies off Amazon. Apart from I use a normal fine tooth comb, I cut it dry and definitely only do a bit at a time, you can take more off quicker than it'll grow back!

With a sweepy one you hold it against the side of your face it doesn't usually cover and cut a straight line across so it falls right. Sounds weird but it works! My last hairdresser couldn't tell it was a diy job.

My hair is very thick so once it's the right length I chop up into it to lighten it.

Go for it. But it's not as easy as people seem to think! I'm a hairdresser and no way would I cut my own hair

Bamboofordinneragain · 11/11/2017 21:57

Depends if your hair is wavy/curly, because if it is you can get away with it easily. My DH cuts mine, adopting the persona and mannerisms of a very ritzy LA stylist on each occasion. This makes him so unfeasably happy that I would feel bad going back to the hairdresser.

ilikestarwarstoo · 11/11/2017 22:14

I use a creaclip. I cut and layer my own hair and fringe. Takes minutes and is so easy. The clip cost me £3 and have saved me hundreds!

Apileofballyhoo · 11/11/2017 22:23

I cut my own, but it's a bit wavy so mistakes aren't obvious. I nearly always have it tied up anyhow - and I often take a few days to get it all to the same length.

To get both sides the same you need to pull them together under your chin IYSWIM, and work back from there, otherwise one side could be shorter than the other.

Dry cut and take your time.
