What's your Wi-Fi password?!

This has just happened and I didn't have a clue what to say and feel like an idiot!

So a man just came to my door and said he was staying next door for a few weeks and doesn't have wifi so wanted to use mine until they get it installed in a few day's time. That didn't add up to me as if you were staying somewhere temporarily then you would just use 4G or go to a cafe and use free wi-fi there! It's a rented house with various people living there and I didn't want to give my password out anyway but also he could tell the whole house and then everyone there could use it for free! It's also hard to believe that nobody in the house has wi-fi.

He was quite pushy and I told him to use 4G or BT wi-fi FON. He ignored this and when I wouldn't give him the password he got annoyed and said "So you're not going to give me the password then? I'm your neighbour!!" He added that his mum was ill in Pakistan and he wanted to phone her with my Wi-fi code...

I told him I was in a rush to go out (was in middle of drying my hair!) and I would get back to him. God knows why I said that, I just didn't know what to say and just wanted him to go.

Any ideas?! Don't know if I over reacted but there have been some dodgy characters next door and I just didn't feel comfortable potentially giving them all my password.

Tell him that no, you won’t be giving him your WiFi password.

FinallyDecidedOnUserName · 08/11/2017 18:07

Very very odd!

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 08/11/2017 18:08

Just do what I do when this kind of stuff happens and put on your best ‘but sir! I’m just a woman’ voice and say your husband won’t allow it. (I’m not even married hahahaha)

SquirmOfEels · 08/11/2017 18:10

I let house guests use our wifi.

I would consider letting friends and known neighbours - but as 4G is good here, I wouldn't expect them to ask.

Random person claiming to have moved nearby - not a chance. Not even with a sob story.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 18:10

Or say you have limited data download and you can’t exceed it.

MarshaBrady0 · 08/11/2017 18:10

No way. A bit unsettling really.

HamSandWitches · 08/11/2017 18:11

If you want rid of him when he comes back say sorry but you don't have unlimited WiFi, you have checked and it's almost at the limit, your dc need it to do homework, that's why you said you would get back so sorry, you have checked but you can't.

SemolinaSilkpaws · 08/11/2017 18:11

If he comes back smile at him very sweetly, head tilt and ask for his bank details in return.

Thinking of changing my router name to DownWithCheekerFuckers. Password to be OopyoursCFs.

FV45 · 08/11/2017 18:12

You could allow him to do whatever urgent stuff he needs to do on his lap top in your house. Then change the password.

Mxyzptlk · 08/11/2017 18:14

Don't allow him to do anything. It could cost you a fortune.

ohbigdaddio · 08/11/2017 18:15

Ha Ha, thanks all for your replies. Mumsnet is great! I'm definitely not giving my password and he's definitely a CFN! I was expecting a delivery so was caught off guard when it wasn't the courier.
My hair was wet and when I said I needed to go and dry it he said "I'll wait here"!! (On my doorstep!) I told him not to and that I would be ages!

PMSL! Cheeky fucker! Grin

Of COURSE you would never give your wi-fi password to some oddball turning up to your door.

What a weirdo! Confused

AlphaBites · 08/11/2017 18:17

I would LOVE to know how we change the router name - I could have such fun 😈

DiegoMadonna · 08/11/2017 18:19

I wouldn't even bother with an excuse. I would just say no, I don't let strangers use my internet connection.

What a weirdo.

LagunaBubbles · 08/11/2017 18:20

Why would anyone ever consider this? Confused

RockinHippy · 08/11/2017 18:21

Wow, he needs to be on the cheeky fucker thread 😱

Nope, no way in hell would I give out my password, especially not to a complete stranger.

If you are not confident telling him to swivel sideways & feck off, just say,

“Oh I’m so sorry, I double checked with my insurers & I’m not allowed to give out my passwords as it will negate our insurance, do try the library or an Internet cafe though, that’s what they are there for” flash a bright shiny smile & shut the door in his face

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 08/11/2017 18:21

Unless the person is willing to contribute towards my internet bill, they can bugger off. Lots of places now offer free WiFi.

eyebrowsonfleek · 08/11/2017 18:22

Just direct him to the nearest Costa or McDonalds (because they do free Wifi)

Definitely not a good idea to hand out the password. You could always play dumb and pretend you don’t know.

Topseyt · 08/11/2017 18:22

Another vote for telling him it is "fuckyou", or "buggeroff".

Do not give it to him. Cheeky fucker.

ComingUpTrumps · 08/11/2017 18:23

' sure it's FUKOFTW4T'

Omg pleeeease give him this as your password 😂

RosaTheOwl · 08/11/2017 18:23

Major CF. I can't believe people ask this.

Tell him no and if he tries to pull any sympathy stunts, tell him you weren't born yesterday.

How did he even know you had WiFi? I would definately say no.

RockinHippy · 08/11/2017 18:25

I would LOVE to know how we change the router name - I could have such fun 😈

me too Alpha, I spotted one pop on our WiFi search which slagged off noisy neighbours at a particular house number, I was very impressed & wanted to play 😂

SarahH12 · 08/11/2017 18:28

Bloody hell what a weirdo!! Tell him it's the MN acronym that I can never remember but has lots of fucks in it
