Do you get overstimulated at times?

Just a general query really. Just wondering as an adult whether you get overstimulated at times? So sometimes there is just too much noise and stuff going on, and you need to get away for some peace and quiet?

Of course... doesn't everyone?! Especially if we have guests or a very busy house, I'll have a lie down in a dark room afterwards!

MrTrebus · 08/11/2017 17:01

Definitely!

Fluteytootey · 08/11/2017 17:03

I definitely do

Anatidae · 08/11/2017 17:04

Yes. Absolutely

koalab · 08/11/2017 17:05

Yes, I've really noticed it since being on maternity leave. Baby sensory groups are often too much for me if they are very busy!!

pitterpatterrain · 08/11/2017 17:05

Yes. Overwhelming and stressful at times

district · 08/11/2017 17:06

Absolutely. Almost daily, in fact.

BishopBrennansArse · 08/11/2017 17:09

Every day. I’m autistic, that’s my existence.

RockyBayEve · 08/11/2017 17:09

Yep I get overstimulated a lot but I do have Aspergers.

Iamabuyingbootsaddict · 08/11/2017 17:15

Definitely, I think it can be unavoidable as there seems sometimes to be no escaping constant news on a loop (eg at the gym) ...the noise of everyone's tech in the house (teenagers) and my personal bug bear every kitchen appliance has an alarm these days. At family get togethers when everyone is talking at once I feel very over stimulated and like another poster I have to go and lie down somewhere quiet and calm where there are no people. I used to feel bad about it but now just accept it about myself. Getting outside helps too ...I'm a fan of a neighbourhood walk to unwind.

brasty · 08/11/2017 17:15

Okay thanks, I had wondered because I really do. I really need some quiet sometimes and for no one to talk to me at all.

Yes, i do. However, I also love meeting up with family/friends and socialising generally. The trick is to make sure you get the right amount of down time too.

CappuccinoCake · 08/11/2017 17:23

I think everyone does!

Laiste · 08/11/2017 17:27

Yes. It sounds silly but standing waiting while DD4 does her ballet lesson in the foyer of the social club - a tiny room with about 10 plastic chairs around the edge of it and about 300 30 people standing room only - i sometimes feel as if i'm going to bolt out of the room with the noise and the stale air.

PalomaViolets · 08/11/2017 17:30

Yup. At home with a new baby and there’s just so much noise! The washing machine, tumble dryer, tv/radio, the breast pump, not least the baby....

AcrossthePond55 · 08/11/2017 17:30

Oh goodness, YES. I live in a household with two loud voiced, heavy footed men and a yappy dog. There are times I make up errands so I can take the car and just park it and sit in silence for 15 minutes.

There's nothing wrong with getting yourself a little peace and quiet when you need it. But it can be really hard if you have DC and/or a DH around. Is there any way you can get up a bit earlier than the rest of them or go to bed a bit later? Even 10-15 minutes can help.

ASDismynormality · 08/11/2017 17:31

I do, I think the majority of people do.

gamerchick · 08/11/2017 17:33

Yes, I arrange regular downtime for just this reason. At least once a week!

SoMuchToBits · 08/11/2017 17:33

Yes, and I think it's harder these days, because everywhere is so "busy". Supermarkets, for instance, are massive, with crowds of noisy people, often music as well, and bright lights/bright displays.
It's partly why I shop mostly in my local small shops (butcher, greengrocer etc).

Waiting rooms, too, often have tv screens, or music playing, as well as people talking. It's all too much.

Eolian · 08/11/2017 17:39

Yes, but not to the extent that I can't cope. I think over 20 years of being a teacher have made me appreciate quiet but cope well with noise when I have to!

asongforthelovers · 08/11/2017 17:40

Yes!

I enjoyed going to my room during pregnancy and lying with my headphones listening to music.

I get no peace and quiet now, house is chaotic morning till bed time. Can’t get to wind down get 5 minutes to myself in a bath until DH is home, kids & baby have been fed then I have someone chapping to get in 🤦🏻‍♀️

brasty · 08/11/2017 18:17

Yes I do sometimes stay up a bit late just so I can get quiet to myself.
