To think woman at corner shop should offer to help pack my items?

I picked up a couple of items at my local corner shop, it was quiet in there and the woman behind the counter is very quick and seems to rush you. I asked for a bag, she put the bag on the counter and handed me my change. I put the change in my purse as quickly as I can (bare in mind somebody is behind me in the queue at this point) and she just stands there watching me instead of being helpful and putting my 4 items in the bag. Obviously she can't serve the next customer until i've put my stuff in the bag etc.

AIBU to think she should at least offer to help pack?

When I worked at Woolies donkeys years ago we always had to pack bags for the customer. Its more effiecient on a normal counter to do it that way. yanbu.

Depends on when in the transaction someone asks for a bag as to whether I pack for them. I work in a supermarket but I mostly work behind the cigarette/lottery kiosk where there are two tills but usually only one person manning them (unless it's a busy period) because there is only a tiny square of counter space on the far side of the till to put items on.

If a customer comes up with a basket off shopping and asks for a bag first then I will pack the bag purely because there is no room not to - the bag goes on the counter next to the basket, I remove items from basket, scan and place into bag.

If however I have scanned all the customers items and they then ask for a bag, I tend not to pack the bag for them unless they ask. I have buttons on the till to add the bags to the total so I put it on and then take payment. If it's by card then I will use their card payment time to get the bag & open it before handing it to the customer to start packing whilst I deal with the receipt and things like cashback. If they pay by cash then I will get them the bag while they're getting the money out and put it on top of the shopping while the money exchanges hands and then they start packing whilst I check what money they have handed me, get their change and receipt etc. Usually they only have a few bits to pack so by the time I've finished sorting things out in the till, they have finished packing.

If they ask for a bag after the initial transaction is complete then whether or not I pack depends on how long my queue is - if there's nobody waiting or only one or two people there I will try and help the customer pack but if the queue is long I will usually leave the packing customer to finish and move down to help the next customer as by the time I have checked their lottery ticket, got them their scratch cards, got their million and one tickets for the next euromillions draw and/or located their cigarettes in the cabinets, the packing customer has finished and gone and my queue hasn't had to wait. On the rare occasion they are still there, then because the counter is to the far side of my till (setup: queue _ till ___ entrance/exit doors) then I can still serve the rest of the queue without the packing customer holding up the queue (and when someone isn't packing it's usually where people who have finished their transactions move to so that they can put away their cigarettes/wallet/check their ticket/find their car keys in their handbag) etc without rushing or being in the way,

YABU, she’s a cashier not your personal servant.

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 08/11/2017 17:19

Seriously, put them in the bag yourself. Hmm

nothing to do with being a servant. Some shops regard this as being part of the cashier's job, as some retail workers have explained on this thread.

Agree if you want stuff packed for you then you ask for a bag and them to do the packing before they start scanning.

Trying to get one angry cat into any form of containment is tricky, 4 of the devils and I'd be hoping for a hand with them.
Excited Octopus and carrier bags are the Devils work and experience has taught me to use a box.

most supermarkets don't pack for you or help - every supermarket I shop in (except Aldi or Lidl) ask me if I would like help packing my bags.

As I said earlier, I work in retail, I like helping people and providing great customer service, I go out of my way to help my customers- and that is why a lot of them return to shop with me Smile. And no, I don't own the shop.

lazyarse123 · 08/11/2017 19:21

Me too Ragwort. I have been complimented on my bag packing abilities. So proud. I can't watch when someone does their own packing and puts bread or breakables at the bottom. It's really not difficult to be helpful and pleasant.

lazyarse123 · 08/11/2017 19:24

Plus I am always happy to help young children do their shopping as are my colleague's. So sick of being lumped together with the miserable shop workers out there.

blackheartsgirl · 08/11/2017 19:27

Our local am and pm store packs your bags and they’re all lovely, they all live local and we’ve known them for years

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 08/11/2017 19:30

I love these kind of stories, you can always guarantee the offender gives the innocent party a glare. It's never a look or a stare, always a glare.

Eh I can't get worked up over a shop assistant thinking a person would be capable of packing 4 things. They can't win sometimes, some people hate someone else packing their bags, where as others welcome it.

First part isn't for this thread. C&P fail!

YABU, she’s a cashier not your personal servant.

It used to be the norm for cashiers to pack. I don't think it's unreasonable for anyone to consider packing to be part of the service. Not even part of the "service", just part of the process.

(I was a cashier in a smallish supermarket, in Canada, 35 years ago. Packing was part of my job.)
