to say Stranger Things Series 2 was fucking shit?

Just so you know, I'm not BU because it was absolutely shit.

Spoiler Alert*

It was formulaic

Eleven running away to meet Number 8 was just strange and completely unnecessary.

Number 8's band of 80s outlaws were completely ridiculous (compared with the fairly normal characters in Hawkins)

All the monsters was a really dumb, boring and over-dramatic plot device.

Introducing Bob just for Bob to die was lazy.

The ending of the whole series was just plain creepy. In series 1 (and a lot of series 2), the kids had a really idealised 80s childhood- great friendship, a secret club, charging around the town on cool bikes getting into adventures, communicating via walkie talkie, hanging out at the arcade. Then, suddenly, in the last episode they're having some kind of weir pseudo-adult, sexually charged slow dancing bullshit. Whaaaat?

peach I kind of think that's why I like it. I don't really care what happens to the characters so I feel like I'm watching it at a really superficial level (for the songs, the story) rather than engaging with it. It's kind of like "background TV".

I think about Heavy Boobs nearly every day and it always makes me smile.

The Chicago episode was incredibly clumsy but the key point of it was obviously the part when the guy they were about to kill revealed that 'Papa' wasn't actually dead. That's what S3 will be about.

DenPerry · 13/11/2017 11:43

I think I must have low standards for tv as I loved it Grin I am easily pleased. Although didn’t like Bob dying after all the good he’d done.. He was dragged into this mess he didn’t have a clue about and then died for it.

MaximaDeWit · 13/11/2017 11:45

I also loved it. I thought the ending was really sweet although I do hope it doesn’t spoil the dynamics for the next series.

Was very sad that Bob died but I was glad Barb’s parents had some closure and that some of the other characters were developed more

AKAmyself · 13/11/2017 11:48

Totally agree. Shamefully exploitative of season one, not a single new idea, every character a charicaure of him/herself (SOMEONE PLEASE LOCK DUSTIN IN A ROOM AND THROW AWAY THE KEY). The kids have lost their innocence through shitty, lazy writing. And the only great character gets killed for no reason (RIP, Bob).

I didn't really get how they did get closure though. Maybe I missed it. Did they get Barb's body back from the upside-down? Did they know about the upside-down? Who explained it to them? Weren't they just like "What the actual fuck are you talking about?"?

I actually think Barb's still alive in the upside-down. I think series 4 will start with her climbing out of a tree somewhere far away from Hawkins all dazed and confused and covered in slime and not remembering who she is. She'll be taken to an institution where she'll start to communicate with her mum through the lights and her mum will enlist Nancy to help her find Barb.

It was on the news at the end - the lab took responsibility although it was blamed on a chemical leak IIRC

MsGameandWatching · 13/11/2017 20:55

I thought it was lovely. The bit where Eleven came back and killed all the demadogs, saving them in the cabin was awesome! And then Mike's face when he saw her.

I think the weird Chicago episode was necessary, it rounded Eleven out. She'd never been anywhere, she was the kid in rags eating frozen Eggos but going there and seeing the city and being with her sister gave her the abilities to expand her powers and save them all.

Love Steve but LOVE Hopper Grin

Sheitgeist · 13/11/2017 23:05

It was pretty obvious that Eleven was going to be wheeled out as the 'deus ex machina' to fix it and save them all though, wasn't it?

And poor Will needs a blooming good holiday now after all those upside down experiences!

BabychamSocialist · 13/11/2017 23:24

Stranger Things 2 is a bit like Back to the Future 2, if we consider Stranger Things 1 the original Back to the Future. Like, it has all the elements there but as a cohesive thing it just doesn't work as well as it should do.

We watched Series 1 and 2 all in one go over two weekends (I know, we have no life) and probably enjoyed Series 2 a little more than those who waited a whole year to see it.

I think we all fell a bit in love with Steve Harrington, didn't we? He turned from douchebag into 'group dad' and it made him sooo much better. My favourite quote was:

Steve: How do you know it’s not just a lizard?
Dustin: Because his face opened up and he ate my cat!
Steve: Yeah, probably not a lizard.

Calling all Steve lovers...

Have you seen this ?

It's brilliant. Not the tension of the first but I love the character development the nostalgia and the blossoming romances. Reminds me off Harry Potter in that respect. There isn't one character I don't like and the humour is brilliant thrown in in between attention.

Highlights from me with Jonathan and Nancy, wills acting, love triangle with Dustin Max and Lucas and the last seen at school dance was fantastic very funny and sweet and then the tension right at the end was brilliant

kootoo123 · 23/11/2017 23:40

I think the 'other 10' (at least) kids with superpowers would be explored at somepoint. Maybe a bit later though a little easter egg this season pointing to some others to be explored on future seasons may have served better. But I guess the idea was so 11 gets her 'biological' family but realises her real family and home is back with cop. So she gets what she really wants and deserves since ep 1 s1.

I think the gang characters were a bit lame though and if its a show about these characters it does have an air of James Pattersons (i want to say lakehouse) and then x series about special kids escaping a lab and searching for family. When really it is about the main kids.

I enjoyed the season as a whole though. Binged watched most and look forward to s3.

Bob's death was unnecessary.

kootoo123 · 23/11/2017 23:51

Ps I disagree that 11 was the deus ex machina. If its the obvious solution its not the d.e.m which is generally something outside of the story that hasn't been mentioned before suddenly resolving the seemably impossible situation. She was on her way back to town needed to make an entrance having further developed her powers and her saving them was on point. I think anyway.

Leontine · 23/11/2017 23:57

I think I actually preferred this season. I don't think they show is that great though.
