Motherland on BBC

Anyone watched Motherland on the BBC?

There's a pilot episode on a few months back that's still on iPlayer, and it's starting properly as a series tomorrow.

I really wanted to like it as a relative had said it was great, but I just didn't find it particularly funny. What did everyone else think?

Like Outnumbered but focuses on the parents - I love it Grin (or should that be Wine)

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 29/11/2017 21:24

I loved it !
It's actually quite dark as the series progresses but well observed

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 29/11/2017 21:49

If you want seriously funny new comedy watch GameFace on E4. I binged the whole series on All4.

Hilarious.

BlessedBeTheFruit · 29/11/2017 21:52

Yes I second GameFace. Really good. And you actually care what happens to the main character (not that that is always necessary, but Julia was just too annoying).

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 29/11/2017 21:54

I love it. I posted this on telly addicts, but the same thing that happened to Julia in the pilot happened to me. I got invited for a mass play date with DD by an 'alpha mum' (who is lovely and nothing like Amanda), for spag Bol as well. I'd not eaten a thing all day and was really excited for my favourite pasta dish, well alpha Mum only made food for the kids! I could've cried, and howled laughing watching the pilot

scrabbler3 · 29/11/2017 23:03

I liked it and would watch a second series. Julia is a bit too chaotIc and annoying to be true though, and her husband too ridiculous - as a pp said, why would she tolerate him.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 30/11/2017 07:23

Julia is selfish and horrible !

ImperfectTents · 30/11/2017 08:40

I couldn't get past her stomping about in that red coat fastened up to the neck, who does that?

Believeitornot · 30/11/2017 08:45

It was a little too much of parody. Most working mums do not earn loads and cannot afford nannies. So a lot of that didn’t really work - and I speak as someone who does.

As a working mum I spend most of my time feeling guilty I’m not seeing the kids, trying to remember everything and seething inside about dh not doing enough. I think it didn’t quite hit the mark in enough places. I did wonder if it had been written by a man who’d skimmed the Internet for stereotypes.

Dozer · 30/11/2017 09:09

I agree believeitornot, julia would’ve known they couldn’t afford a nanny.

The wet dad is also a lazy stereotype.

EssentialHummus · 30/11/2017 09:25

I loved Catastophe; this was too cliched for me. There were a few darker moments - like Kevin forcing his trews on the other dad - which were great though.

Thymeout · 30/11/2017 09:29

I think the script is good, but let down by the actors. Only Diane Morgan (Liz) is naturally funny. All she has to do is raise an eyebrow. And it's very slow. In the pool party episode, there were long gaps relying on visual humour, which didn't come off, before the next funny line. Much sharper editing needed. I like Ann and Marian and the in-laws were good, but the Queen Bee and Julia, herself, are too exaggerated and cringe-making. I really can't see the point of Kevin.

Roomba · 30/11/2017 09:33

All I could think when Kevin was walking home in the towel was 'Why hasn't he picked up the other dad's trousers on from outside where he threw them, and put those on?'. He'd have to wait til the other dad had left, obviously, or it could be a bit embarrassing Grin

I have also been invited round for dinner and then not been fed as adults ate together later in their house. Was bloody ravenous watching DS eat his pizza. I didn't raid the leftovers though.

ZaZathecat · 30/11/2017 09:35

Julia's husband represents 50% of the not-so-dhs on the Relationships board!

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 30/11/2017 13:51

My colleague kept saying how hilarious it was so I watched 2 episodes and would give it 5/10 at a push.

MaddieElla · 30/11/2017 14:08

I had high hopes at the first scene where she's on the phone to the school, saying it was a tragedy that her kid would miss swimming as he didn't have his kit.

But then it got a bit (lot) shit.

Whitecurrants · 30/11/2017 15:15

Overall I liked it although it was a bit uneaven. Great idea though. All the main characters were dreadful and unlikeable apart from maybe Liz and Anne.

MaddieElla · 30/11/2017 16:18

She's so busy and frantic and hasn't got enough time but spends 90% of her time in the coffee shop with the other mums?

TheNoseyProject · 30/11/2017 16:25

I like it I think. I certainly laughed a lot but I also think it’s a bit cliche and the relationship with her Mum is too unrealistic.

But I did laugh a lot. Liz and Anne are the best characters.
