To allow my dog to lick my face (sort of light hearted)

DM visited this afternoon and was disgusted that I allowed Ella (newly acquired dog (lurcher) to greet me by giving me a full face wash (lick). I always allow her to do this followed by a big cuddle. I do of course follow this up with a full face wash. AIBU to allow this? Does anyone else do this? Does anyone know why dogs do this?

My dog is also Ella! A bichon, she's the same loves a kiss! I let her do it, I know people who hate it and some people who love it, totally personal choice it's your face! X

Dare I also admit that she sleeps with me under the covers.

Ewwwwww, rank. Dig breath saliva all over your face

sooperdooper · 06/11/2017 19:29

Utterly vile, I'd be disgusted if anyone I knew allowed their dog to lick their face, grim

And I love dogs, had them all my life, it's something you train them not to do

Got two terriers and one doesn't lick and the other does. I've tried and still try to get her to stop and she does at that moment, but starts again when situation arises. She also licks the other dogs face when sitting/lying around relaxing.
It's pack behavior, and it shows affection and acceptance to the recipient from the dog. My two will lick each others faces quite often. But the 'problem' one seems to have a compulsion to do it. I see what she digs up and eats or chews and where she licks, and I'm not amused when she does catch my face especially near my mouth! But I do let her lick my hands and wash afterwards when she's in need of reassurance and comfort, like now with fireworks.
But as far as I'm concerned it's your face and if you want to greet your dog and show affection that way it's up to you so on that basis YANBU!
Hope you continue to enjoy your dog!

I don’t like licks in the face but it’s just one of their ways of showing affection - like we hug or kiss. They are pack animals and affection is important.

As for the bacteria - meh. I want a strong immune system.

Fair enough, I'm guessing you're not as much as much of a dog lover that you make out to be.

Just seen your update - mine starts off on a blanket on top of the covers but..... Sometimes I find her in there with me!
As a side note, my pony likes to lick my jeans. Any jeans, but must be jeans, any other trousers are tested and rejected!

My dog has just been licking his anus for about 5 minutes. Would I allow him to lick my face now?

Would I fuck! Shock

It’s beyond minging to even think about it. And nobody loves their dog more than me.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 06/11/2017 20:08

Don't worry about it OP, my terrier also clambers into our bed when we're too sleepy to protest. The last few mornings, what with all the fireworks, I've woken to her under the covers, curled up under my chin (she's a Patterdale).

I adore my children but would I rub their poo on my face? Eh, no...does that mean I'm not a child lover?

PandorasXbox · 06/11/2017 20:18

You can still be a dog lover and have some standards of hygiene Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 06/11/2017 20:24

My dog can’t lick her arse. I let her lick my arm and my toes. She doesn’t try to lick my face.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 06/11/2017 20:24

Haha quite Pandora. I'm not a germ phobe but I am an emetophobe - and there's nothing worse than a mistimed terrier jump for joy when the tongue goes STRAIGHT in your mouth.

But I must love her because I have caught dog vomit in my hands because I didn't want it to go over the car upholstery

PandorasXbox · 06/11/2017 20:27

Ewww yes that sly little darting tongue. It’s caught me out a few times too 🤢😷

beckythomas · 06/11/2017 20:27

Its not uncommon to see a dog licking one's face. I have watched in many real videos on youtube. That said, I have not allowed my pet to lick my face. It depends upon people and the bonding we share with the pet. If you feel disgusted don't let the dog do it.

bigsighall · 06/11/2017 20:28

I completely love my dog. I have horses. He eats horse poo regularly and tries to lick me. It's gross... we have words!

Even if I had an issue with it, I don't think I could stop my dog from licking my face.
I prefer to think of it as his way of giving me kisses, he only does it with his favourite people.

SabineUndine · 06/11/2017 20:30

Bleugh. My cat licks my hand and I always go straight off and wash it.

Ilovelampandchair · 06/11/2017 20:33

Oh God, you might as well lick his balls and rub your face in chicken shit. Then put your nose to the dogs anus. Same thing.

I must admit I'm pretty chilled about hygiene but if I saw that I'd be a bit put off having food at your house. Just like people who let cats put their bum holes on the kitchen counter and grab at ingredients with their rat claws. (I love my cat btw).

suepowell · 06/11/2017 20:35

You can always NOT let your dog lick your face. But remember whatever dog does, it does with love. The good news is that your dog won't feel bad for you not letting him lick your face. He would still show the love in that manner only.
