Messed up quite a bit today.

Went for a long run yesterday (in a competitive race), which took a lot out of me. More than I expected.

I was meant to go to work somewhere today on a one-off assignment from 9 to 5. I overslept, and didn't make it. But also didn't tell anyone to let them know I wouldn't make it, because I felt so guilty at oversleeping. I'm so ashamed, guilty and angry at myself.

Any ideas please about how I can 'put my big girl pants on' and make it all better?

Oh dear, you need to contact someone ASAP. I have to admit I would lie and say you’d been struck by a bug or food poisoning etc and just weren’t able to phone earlier (I know it’s not the ‘right’ thing to do morally but I’m bein honest, I wouldn’t know how to just say ‘I was just a flake and didn’t call you when I woke up late’

MyKingdomForBrie · 06/11/2017 14:04

*being

CatastropheKate · 06/11/2017 14:05

Just turn up tomorrow instead.

RavingRoo · 06/11/2017 14:06

What was the assignment? If training or similar it’s not really a big deal. Just be honest and say you weren’t feeling well.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 06/11/2017 14:06

Do it now, and do it quickly. I sometimes spend literally days working myself up about making phone calls or sending emails that I find scary. It is never, ever as bad as it is in my head. The quicker you make the call and apologise the quicker it's over and done with.

Finola1step · 06/11/2017 14:07

What was the assignment?

humblesims · 06/11/2017 14:08

Yup, ring now and apologise profusely, allude to illness, the details of which might sound nasty, and apologise some more. Do it and move on.

LemonShark · 06/11/2017 14:10

I'm torn between being honest and lying and contacting them immediately saying you're so sorry you didn't attend, you have health issue and were in A&E or something. But to be fair, I can't think of an illness that would be so bad you're in a&e and leave you unable to use your phone while also well enough to be out already!

I doubt your reputation will recover from this at this particular assignment but you may as well make something up. I'd feel uncomfortable doing it though.

Clovertoast · 06/11/2017 14:13

if its work related have they not contacted you to find out where you are ??

gamerchick · 06/11/2017 14:14

Ring up all doubtful and say you think you have a nagging suspicion that you’ve wrote a date down wrong and say ‘it is tomorrow I’m there isn’t it?’ Then take it from there with your apologies.

ComingUpTrumps · 06/11/2017 14:14

Thanks everyone.
No they haven't contacted me yet to find out where I am. I'll ring them up now - thanks again.

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 14:15

I would contact them apologise and say you were up all night ill very very sorry not long woken up v vsorry.... then forget about it

Viviennemary · 06/11/2017 14:18

Just say you woke up and felt really ill and meant to phone in five minutes but felt so dizzy you had to lie down and then you fell asleep. I don't think it's worth telling the whole story.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/11/2017 14:20

I'd also lie and say you thought it was tomorrow and you'll be there bright and early

Make the call now. It will not be worse than the agonies you're suffering now. Tackling a problem is scary but never worse than the not tackling gut churning horroe

BitOutOfPractice · 06/11/2017 14:21

And yes, I am shit at taking my own advice - even though I know it's true. Problems only get worse when you ignore them and the churning in the meantime is tortute. Make the call OP Thanks

GothAndTired · 06/11/2017 14:54

How did it go op?

SootSprite · 06/11/2017 15:00

I’d go with ringing to confirm the start time tomorrow then act all mortified when they tell you it was today. Then go have a nice long bath and plan an early night tonight x

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 06/11/2017 15:02

I would do a diary error, that's more believable than a sickie OP

our consultant do this! just say "I am so sorry, I had this entered for Tuesday 7th by error", has anything come through today??

notangelinajolie · 06/11/2017 15:11

I wouldn't tell them you got the date wrong - that would make you look stupid.

Just pick up the phone and explain that you were unwell in the night (being sick) and slept through your alarm call.

Do it now OP - burying your head in the sand will make it worse.

SandyDenny · 06/11/2017 19:22

How did it go?

ComingUpTrumps · 06/11/2017 22:41

Thanks everyone Flowers it actually went okay, surprisingly.

Not sure if this was the right call, but I just thought it was best to be honest and come clean, so I just admitted that I'd completely messed up on my end - they were really understanding about it.

Great, I'd just be v sure not to do same thing again with them anytime soon. As mgr I always liked fact that someone would be straight rather than inventing stories
