To let my dog upstairs with me tonight

my dog is shaking with fear from the fireworks still going on. Tried to call her to her bed in the kitchen and she sat by the bottom of the stairs shaking. I’ve come up to bed and let her come with me, she’s laid under my bed no longer barking and shaking. Is this a really bad idea? Having visions of her barking to come up every night if I let her stay??

Our dogs never come upstairs but one bonfire night they were clearly shaken. We brought them up, laid out a nice old duvet on the floor for them to lie on... they whined at the door to be let out!
I was actually looking forward to them being close by and sleeping in with us! Pahhhh!!

TheGoodEnoughWife · 05/11/2017 22:37

I would definitely bring him upstairs. We also do the no reaction thing, we do not react in anyway to fireworks going off. No ah, no rushing to the window, no show of concern to the dogs. It was really hard when they were young but a bit like children we found they can judge a situation, and whether they should be scared, by looking at the humans.
They are not bothered by them at all, which is good as we have three.

( I do know that all dogs are different and if your dog is scared it is a really hard time but if anyone is reading this before getting a dog I really would recommend no reaction)

BriechonCheese · 05/11/2017 22:41

TGEW, see we did the whole no reaction thing too and they are still scared. The oldest dog grew up in a loud city and is used to all sorts of noises but loud bangs are too much for him. It's almost like they wind him. The other dog just reacts however the other one reacts.

They're all different.

Onehellofaride · 05/11/2017 22:41

I would let him sleep upstairs. Our ddog sleeps in his own bed in our room every night but we are lucky he isn’t bothered by fireworks.

ReinettePompadour · 05/11/2017 22:47

My dog sat and watched the fireworks in our garden and wasn't bothered in the slightest. I think we have a strange dog

Not strange at all. None of my dogs have ever been bothered by fireworks. My dogs are always gundog breeds anyway so I think that helps. However I have found showing them what makes the noise helped. They sit outside, have a look then wander around the garden not showing any further interest. As a pp said pretty much ignoring them and not changing our routine helps too.

Oh this is a terrible night in our house. My beloved horse bolted due to fireworks and broke his leg.

OldPony · 05/11/2017 22:54

4 years ago I must add.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 05/11/2017 22:59

Yanbu. The fireworks have been going on for over a week here and will doubtless continue all week and into next weekend inconsiderate selfish fuckers

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/11/2017 22:59

We spent all evening cuddling on the sofa, one of mine is terrified of fireworks.
Gave him a zylkene, not sure of that helped by he did calm down eventually and even went out for a wee.

sweetkitty · 05/11/2017 23:02

My dog is currently curled up with me she's had a terrible night hasn't stopped shaking she's only happy curled up next to me.

parklives · 05/11/2017 23:16

My newly rescued dog is not bothered at all thank goodness.
Those of you who dogs are really suffering, you really need to follow the advice of desensitising your dogs long-term. Fireworks aren’t going away.

parklives · 05/11/2017 23:17

Sorry about your horse oldpony

I have cats. One is fine and just looks a bit puzzled before ignoring it (He was trained by my stupid old cat who used to glue herself to the window to look at the pretty lights). The other had poo'd on the carpet tonight for the first time since we've had her. I'll be taking her to bed with me and hoping there's not another loose bowel moment.

She used to live not far from where the main town fireworks are held and it must have been a nightmare for her.

Definitely a good idea.. I hate fireworks for my dog, I'm a big animal lover though so I even worry about wildlife being scared 😂 I'd have them all in my bed having a cuddle if I could

Beerwench · 05/11/2017 23:56

I'd do it, it's a one off and the dog needs comfort right now, your old routine will soon be established again when things settle down.
I finally found something that seemed to help my dog tonight, having a terrier she's obsessed with balls, so, we played ball in the front room. It distracted her enough to ignore most of the fireworks, but the really close ones hurt her ears, so she reacted to them. Got caught out a couple of times but in general it made a difference.
I tried the fireworks CD - problem I found was at a certain volume level she just reacted as she does to actual fireworks and it didn't appear to ease, I just felt like I was winding her up rather than helping, for those who have recommended the CDs - should I persevere or doesn't it work with some dogs?
