To not understand what someone means when they say 'hashtag'?

I don't understand, in any context.

Its a reference to Instagram. You can hashtag a topic of your post and it can he searched based on that by other users. E.g. #selfie or #throwbackthursday etc

It means they think it's a things.

I use Facebook, mainly for my business but have some family/friends on it. I see photos on it that have been shared from instagram with about 1000 hashtags attached. I don’t have the energy for that nonsense

IT's nonsense. It makes no sense which is why you do not understand it! # is a reference to twitter, but people seem to think it is cool to say it in RL when it should be left on twitter.

It's a way of catagorising things on social media for the most part.

It's a way of tagging other people into your inane chatterings.

You tag a friends name so they'll get a notification, or you can tag a phrase like #whataloadofcrap or something and when people search that phrase they'll find yours and any other posts with it.

It's a bit like skimlinks I suppose.Take a pic of yourself, post #selfie and then click on it. You'll find every other post with it on. (Using FB or Instagram that is).

And if you don't get it after that then there's no hope.

Nope. Giving something a hashtag allows other uses to find it, so #cutedogs will show you all the posts on Twitter with cute dogs.

Like if they say hashtag awkward or hashtag funtimes? That is really annoying but it is a reference to instagram and they are trying to be funny. So on instagram
People post pics with hashtags. Like today my feed if full of dinner pics, family outings with #sundayfunday etc. If someone said to me “oh just been to the pub hashtag sundayfunday”, then I would think they are just taking the piss and joking about instagram.

It's a way of describing something complex with single words or short sentences.

So online you use them to tag your posts so that you can search for similar things more easily like #bonfirenight would bring up everything publicly posted by anyone with that tag.

But other phrases are used to signify context that isn't included explicitly in what you've said posted. Eg you could post a photo of toast and an unripe avocado on Instagram and tag it #toast (because that's literally what it is) and also #millenialproblems (because you're joking about your unripe avocado)

Then people who search either of those things will see your post.

Hashtags originated from Twitter, where people use a hashtag to indicate they're talking about a particular subject. so for example, if you're talking about Strictly Come Dancing you'd write your tweet and end it with #strictly. The hash tags are searchable, so you can search #strictly to see all the other tweets about it.

This has evolved and people now use hashtags on Instagram, Facebook, etc and even when talking as away of summing up what there saying.

Does that make sense?
