to think you don't bring 290 tramadol tablets to a foreign country if they aren't even yours

www.thesun.co.uk/news/4838770/holiday-brit-arrest-jail-tramadol-prescription-pill/

"Laura flew to Hurghada airport on October 9 for a fortnight stay with hubby Omar, 33. They met four years ago and she jets out to see him four times a year.

He suffers back pain after an accident, so she took 29 strips of tramadol, each containing ten tablets, plus some Naproxen given to her by a pal.

In Britain tramadol is prescription only, but it is banned in Turkey where addicts use it as a heroin substitute.

A pill sells for 8p — meaning Laura could have made just £23.20 even if she wanted to."

It's an opiate so obviously a controlled drug with a very high abuse potential. Some countries you'd get arrested even if you had a prescription.

Stupid is as stupid does. She’s a moron and she’s going to pay for that.

I’ve got no sympathy for her.

Feel bad for her family though. They didn’t do anything wrong yet they’re going to be left grieving for the idiot.

sinceyouask · 05/11/2017 10:06

Gosh, all of you who know the marriage is a sham and the tablets cannot possibly be for pain relief for the husband... where did you get your facts? You seem so very certain that you can't possibly be speculating.
Hmm
She's an idiot. I am prepared to believe the drugs were for pain relief for her husband. I don't believe a regular traveller with a dh who lives there would be ignorant of the law and not realise how big a risk she was taking, though.

hmmwhatatodo · 05/11/2017 10:18

There’s an article online where her sister says that they are not properly married, they just signed some sort of paperwork that allows them to stay together in the hotel when she visits (!) . Oh, and she has also apparently met the Egyptian wife and children. And he also has other girlfriends. He doesn’t visit her in prison since he lives 5 hours away.

I’m wondering why her protective family allowed her to get into all of this, knowing how vulnerable she was.

If this story is true, this 'glamourous' family are just as idiotic.

pisacake · 05/11/2017 10:59

LOL, so they attempted to bribe their way out, and now they are complaining they got ripped off.

ROFL.

I must say, I had to laugh at the glamorous comment.

Behindthedoor · 05/11/2017 11:40

Ktown

Daft Brits must be costing the foreign office a fortune

Quite so Ktown. I often feel quite embarrassed to be British these days. Not just in the Middle East, but all over, there are those who think a British passport is a Get Out Of Jail Card which excuses them from having to consider their behaviour in foreign climes.

For this case in particular it wouldn’t have been difficult to read the FCO advice, and then research the expat forums for similar tales of woe........or even just abide by UK law.

OnionKnight · 05/11/2017 12:49

Laura and her family sound like complete idiots.

I have no sympathy. A death sentence would be way too harsh but she's fucked up and she has to face the music.

Creambun2 · 05/11/2017 12:59

"We are a glamourous family" Hmm

hmmwhatatodo · 05/11/2017 13:00

As ridiculous as the whole story is turning out to be, I do have some sympathy for her. If she genuinely is as naive as the family are making her out to be, she has probably been spun a good story by him and gone along with the whole thing; in her head he was Prince Charming. Sadly lots of Egyptians are very sly when it comes to money and will try their absolute best to get their hands on as much money/free things as they can (I know lots Egyptian people, some lovely and some not so lovely). I wish there was a way to make him accountable for all of his wrong doings.

RosyWelshcakes · 05/11/2017 13:02

you could get into real trouble if you were caught with prescription opiates in dubai

If you didn't follow the correct procedures which makes having them Ok.

RosyWelshcakes · 05/11/2017 13:05

they just signed some sort of paperwork that allows them to stay together in the hotel when she visits

It could be a temporary marriage that certain sects in Islam allow for.

pisacake · 05/11/2017 13:10

it's not so much a marriage as 'I'm going to commit adultery but we've got this ridiculous loophole that says 'we are married for the duration of sex' so it's not adultery'. Happens i lots of countries

Theimpossiblegirl · 05/11/2017 13:15

I'm not sure making lol and rofl type comments is called for. Poor woman is in a dreadful situation however you look at it. She's either naive or stupid, but she's in real trouble.

hmmwhatatodo · 05/11/2017 13:22

Yes they will have signed some kind of temporary marriage contract. Although I’m not sure how temporary 4 years is. She had nothing to gain from this contract, it’s not like she is a poor Egyptian girl who was doing it for the money. I wonder if the family knew about the contract? Very sad situation.

RosyWelshcakes · 05/11/2017 13:23

Im well aware of that. I just didn't feel the need to explain it.

noeffingidea · 05/11/2017 13:30

She's a drug smuggler, whether she was mislead by her boyfriend or not. I have no sympathy for her. When you travel to a foreign country accept their laws or accept the consequences. It was her responsibility - not her family's or her 'husband's' - to make sure she wasn't carrying anything illegal. If that simple task was beyond her then she shouldn't be travelling alone.
This isn't the first thing this kind of thing has happened, and it won't be the last, because some people seem to think they are above the law.
Having said that, I don't agree with the death penalty, so hopefully it doesn't come to that.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/11/2017 13:38

I have a pot of them in my kitchen cupboard from when my dog was hit by a car

Wow even dogs get the good stuff ! Hope doggy is recovered

Silly mare . Turkish prison for pain killers sheesh

EB123 · 05/11/2017 13:53

I don't agree with the death penalty at all. However if you travel to a country where it exists and you smuggle drugs in then you know the risk you are taking. It wasn't accidental, she packed the drugs, not belonging to her to give to someone else.

Because 1 i'm wondering how she got the tablets in the first place as its very hard to get them, especially in that quantity.
2 her dh knows the law in his country and how serious bringing in a banned drug is, so nope, something clearly very wrong.
3, he's not her husband in another article. He has a wife.Confused

hmmwhatatodo · 05/11/2017 14:24

Her work colleague in a ‘high end clothes shop’ (note more references to their glamorous life style) just gave them to her apparently. Her dad says she wouldn’t know a panadol from a Tramadol. This is Take a Break worthy news for sure as a previous poster pointed out!

gloriawasright · 05/11/2017 15:12

She travelled to Egypt approx 8-16 times ,surely she has seen what security is like there ? She is either very naive or stupid ,or knows exactly what is going on .
And I'm guessing her boyfriend who is married and has many other girlfriend knew exactly what he was doing .

Creambun2 · 05/11/2017 15:16

"High end clothes shop" - in Hull?

Mumof56 · 05/11/2017 15:43

What an idiot.
