To think that the self service tills aren't suitable for a full weekly shop?

I was at the supermarket yesterday. For a few bits (hand basket only). The shop was busy. Big queue at the self service checkouts and this couple caused a massive backlog of people because they took their huge trolley packed to the top into the self checkout bit.
They constantly needed assistance as the scales kept going wrong. The trolley took up the till next to the one they were on. They took up half the till I was trying to use.
And it probably took them twice as long to pay for their shopping this way!

Surely self checkouts should be only for those with a basket and trolleys should sod off to the actual checkouts?

In my local Morrisons they have 4 self service checkouts for trolleys which I used yesterday with no issues but I don`t think the basket self service is the place for trolleys.

Don't most large supermarkets have separate self service for trolleys, so if someone wants to use it for a full trolley that's up to them.

Maybe if the supermarket had more staff on the main tills they wouldn't have chosen the self service ones

I use 3 supermarkets and all of them ban trolleys from the self service tills.

Our big asda has self service tills with conveyor belts so you can scan a full shop yourself

YANBU. I work for a large supermarket chain and I see this twice an hour. It is infuriating.

We have 5 self service tills with a conveyer belt meant for trolleys to use but people still insist on bringing huge trolleyloads of shopping through the basket only self scans then whinge and moan when the scales can’t cope.

I simply had to take this photo a few weeks ago... I was simply agog at the volume of shopping this woman was about to attempt to scan!

It’s the Asda self serve conveyor ones, but surely every item has to fit on the landing/packing area?

The shop had the self service conveyor belt ones, but this couple weren’t on those, they were squeezed into the basket ones pissing off everyone around them and, I’m sure, the poor harassed member of staff dealing with that section.

Self service tills won’t be fit for any shopping until they get a lot better. My local ASDA apparently codes some items to require staff input by default- mostly fresh meat as they are the most commonly stolen.

You are correct if you have to unload everything then repack but I use the scanner in Asda going round which means you just attend to the till to pay

The self serve tills should say they are for baskets only (or a low number of items eg fewer than 10, so that people who can't physically carry a basket aren't disadvantaged).

No they aren't suitable at all. It really pisses me off especially when they have the tills closed and it's the only option and the staff are just hanging round chatting.

I go with trolley but only if I have a basket full worth of shopping. I only use a trolley to avoid my 2 year old getting in the way while shopping. I think there should be an item limit if using a trolley.

I personally think whoever invented the wretched things needs shooting. At point blank range. They NEVER work, cause chaos and are the least time efficient inventions ever. And yet more and more of them are appearing.

Our local Morrisons has conveyor self-service for trolleys so the option is there is you want it; this is in addition to basket self-service and 'normal' checkouts. So an option for everyone.

I've been turned away from self service in Tesco with one of those shallow trolleys.

I refuse to use them at all for anything. They are trying to replace hiring people with self service points. People needs jobs.

No, YANBU, it's obnoxious when people do this.

People need to realise that even if they don’t have a lot in their trolley they will still end up blocking other tills at the self service basket checkouts.

My local Lidl is in a student area and tries not to open the main tills if they can get away with it so when you do have a weekly shop you have to float around like a tumshie in the area of the tills till one of the staff notices and announces which till they’re going to man. Annoys the hell out of me but it’s local and so much cheaper so I put up with it. During the summer months, because there’s no students, they cut their staffing and you sometimes have the ludicrous situation where the employee manning the self service is the only one available to man the main till for trollies.

If they’ve not used self service before, maybe those shoppers didn’t realise you couldn’t swipe and put straight back in your trolley. Took my DH a few goes to accept you couldn’t pack into your trolley till the whole transaction was complete. Hopefully they’ll not do that again but sounds like the shop needed more staff on the tills.

I’m sure the technology isn’t far away for you just to wheel your whole trolley past a scanner and everything in there to be scanned at once. Great for the store and the shopper but horrendous for staff employment opportunities.

Our local large supermarket has no tills on after 9pm only self scan.
We were going on hols early a few weeks ago (cottage) and went after 9 pm the night before totally forgetting! Spent about £300 and was probably as amused as the shoppers behind me!! Hate the fecking things!!

Well I disagree with everything you say! I find they almost always work; seem to run efficiently and without chaos in every supermarket I visit and, for small numbers of items, are much faster than waiting at a manned checkout.

Having said that I do not think the non-conveyor belt ones are suitable for a loaded trolley. Simply there isn't enough space to put the scanned items and if you move them before you have competed the transaction the till will complain.
